Saint James Single Cask 2001
Sip this neat and it drinks like a darker, drier agricole: pineapple and dried fruit up front, then oak, spice and roasted nuts taking over. The palate turns quite spicy — licorice and anise that one taster compared to a Demerara — over a rounded but dry body. Aged 15 years from Martinique cane juice, it's a controlled, woody Saint James rather than a fruit bomb.

A tasty, masterful Single Cask. On the nose, tropical fruits (pineapple) and dried fruits lead the way, before sugarcane, oak, spices, nuts and caramel take over with a smooth transition. An elegant, well-balanced rum on the nose. The attack on the palate is livelier and more intense. The spices are much more exuberant (licorice and aniseed in particular, reminiscent of some Demerara) and the empyreumatic notes (coffee, roasted nuts, toasted notes) are much more pronounced. They lend a certain greediness to this very round, dry profile. Dried and exotic fruits are less present, but know how to tantalize the taste buds. It's not the most overwhelming rum, but it shows remarkable mastery. The long, dry, dark finish prolongs the pleasure with spices, coffee, wood and leather, accompanied by dried fruit and tannins. Subtle, complex and refined, this cuvée is too often overlooked, yet it has the merit of representing what Saint James does best.

Rum Friendly Club Advent Calendar Day 9.
