Old Brothers Hampden & Monymusk MLC/HJF Open Spirits 2002

Overripe pineapple, mango and butter meet varnish, rubber and dry wood — a Jamaican blend of Clarendon/Monymusk and Hampden marc at a full 66.3%. Members love the fruit and esters but note the two components don't quite fuse: Clarendon dominates the palate, Hampden's funk arrives late. One taster flags "baked sweet-sour apricot" over gum and oak in the finish.

Aggregated from 15 community reviews.

Fruity Jamaican high-ester blend at cask strength Well-liked as an intense, fruity high-ester blend — the recurring gripe is the Clarendon and Hampden halves don't marry cleanly, and it's hot at full proof.

Perfect for

high-ester Jamaica fans who sip cask strength

An excellent blend where greediness and power are mixed. It is magnificent.

A Jamaican blend that starts with a nose full of greed and flavors, combining tropical fruits, nuts, solvents, smoky and caramelized notes with a nice balance. Powerful in the mouth, the rum remains faithful to what is in the nose, with the same greediness. The alcohol is well integrated, even if the first sip is quite strong. The finish is long and wants to be warm and sweet, the apricot prolonging the pleasure. A very nice blend.

Interesting combination! However, it is not quite clear to me why one fabricates such a blend. At the beginning and in the middle part, the typical astringent Clarendon notes come out, in the finish rather the Hampden notes.
