Rhum J.M 2004

Most tasters land in the high 8s to 9s here, and the one recurring gripe is the modest 42.9% — a few wish it hit harder to push the aromatics further. What everyone agrees on: dried fruit, leather, chocolate and gingerbread over 15 years of tropical aging, with a spicy, faintly bitter-cocoa finish. One caller found the nose too pungent and anise-heavy, but that's the outlier.

Very oily and a wonderful color. Excellent nose. Dried fruit, spices and gingerbread. Blended to absolute perfection.😍 As far as I know, the rum is not diluted, powerful despite the low strength. 15 years of tropical maturation and no lignification whatsoever testify to skill in the cellar. When it enters the mouth, it seems a little thin at first, but then the spiciness really kicks in. Plenty of tingling lemon a la Neisson 2005. Medium-long, spicy finish. An extremely round, outstanding Agricole. High craftsmanship from a friendly, small winery.

Taste of 3 random rhum agricoles, let´s see. Rum Artesanal Clement 2015, 55,5% Tamosi Hiali Peré Labat 2013, 57,5% J.M Millisime 2004, 42,9% C: Dark Gold N: This is new! Burnt anis, lots. Dark fruits here as well, but it´s the anis that almost takes an ester kind of form. It´s pungent. It makes me think of spoiled fruits. After a while it calms down and the pencil shavings appear. Is this typical of long-time-tropical-aged rums? Not a fan. I also get bourbon and vinegar. M: Milk chocolate, that was nice. Faint pencil shaving fumes. I wasn’t expecting a big taste since this is the only rum that’s reduced to 42,9%. F: It vanish rather fast. B: No.

A wonderful Agricole.... Very balanced and with a density of dark fruits, spices, wood and chocolate. It's really fun. It remains at a consistently high level of quality from the nose to the finish. The low alcohol content is not noticeable here

This is a wonderful rum and the price to quality is very good. I'd say this one is better that its predecessor. More elegant in a way. The nose is intense and fruity with leather, chocolate, wood trailed by light vanilla and nuts. The notes become much clearer once rested for more than 15 minutes. The palate is intense and well balanced with fruit, leather, chocolate as well as light wood and vanilla. The finish is medium to long with dried fruit, coffee and light wood and tobacco. I will have to order a bottle of this rum :-)

Wundervolle Nase!

This 2004 vintage is a J.M. for the ages. The nose is very greedy and fruity, with notes of lemon, mango and marmalade, before moving on to gourmet notes of caramel, cream, chocolate and brown sugar. Subtle woody, spicy and nutty notes complete the olfactory profile. On the palate, the diluted aspect is not so distracting. The attack is smooth, but more spicy and woody than the nose. Notes of coffee, leather and tobacco give character to this rum, which loses a little of its greediness and fruitiness here. The finish evokes agricultural freshness, a floral and spicy profile with a dry, fairly complex structure. A rum that evolves both on the nose and palate with time, offering a highly diversified aromatic palette. A successful vintage for J.M.

What a fine drop. This rum goes down like oil. Beautiful legs in the glass. Drinks like an easy sipper that's insanely complex, smooth, and elegant. From memory, by far the best J.M I've had in the glass so far.

Heavy sweetness of dried fruit, nougat chocolate, nuts, wood, subtle citrus fruit aromas, spices, coffee...the variety of flavors is impressive. All of this remains very harmonious in an all-round harmonious, almost elegant profile. Thanks to its delicacy, this is one of the best J.M Rhums I know. Excellent.

Rhum J.M is Martinique's oldest surviving distillery, tucked into a lush volcanic valley in Macouba on the northern slopes of Mount Pelee. It is the only producer on the island that makes its rum entirely from its own cane, milled within an hour of cutting, and its brown-sugar signature has made J.M one of the most beloved agricole names with collectors.
