Velier Caroni Heavy Trinidad Rum HTR 1982
Caroni devotees are the crowd here: this 1982 Velier leans dry and heavy, with tar, rubber and diesel wrapped around raisin, dried fruit, tobacco and roasted coffee. Several tasters call out menthol and a whiff of glue over warm oak. Most find it beautifully balanced; a few note added Paxarete gives it a sherry-ish, roasted edge. Long, dark, barely sweet.

A beautiful Caroni!!! Rather to enjoy. Lots of dried fruit, wood and spices. Liquid licorice. Tar and rubber are only faintly perceptible overall. Very round, warm and balanced. I was lucky to be able to buy a half-full bottle in a restaurant.

The Epic Velier Caroni Tasting: Complex with pointed sweetness and heavy fruit notes, which are contrasted by the barrel influences, tart spiciness and subtle Caroni dirt notes. One of the releases from the presumed "Paxarette era", which scores with sophistication and complexity despite 24 years of tropical storage.
Review by Oliver
Great roasted note! Sherry associations due to the addition of Paxarete. Dry finish.

Update: Second draw still very good. A little oxidation hasn't hurt and I'd add another point now. Great rum. I was looking forward to this tasting. I think this is my oldest Caroni Vintage so far. Great wood maturity with a bit of menthol and glue around the tar and gum notes with lots of raisin and dried fruit as well as tobacco. Absolutely dry on the palate (yay) but still with the great raisins and some petrol. I like it very much

Stoff zum Durchdrehen! Wunderbarer Caroni mit der typischen dreckigen DNA. (Gummi, Teer etc.)

Epic Velier Caroni Tasting: Nice and round, rather fruity, not very dirty, perhaps not quite as complex. Finish not quite as long.

Great dry Caroni without sweetness

A nose with lots of fruit, baskets of tropical and yellow fruits. The attack on the palate is surprisingly soft, easy, almost sweet. The fruit arrives with great elegance. The palate brings out a hint of diesel, which was virtually absent on the nose, and gives great depth to the aromas. The finish is incredibly long, on fruit again with a slightly more pronounced diesel. In my empty glass, astonishing vegetal aromas. A very fine rum on the balance between fruit and Caroni typicity.

A Caroni of the great days, absolutely fantastic and representing a part of rum history. The nose evolves elegantly between machine shop notes (tar, rubber) and sweet roasted notes of coffee, roasted hazelnut and hot caramel. Spices (vanilla, pepper, licorice) harmonize perfectly with fruit (dried, tropical, grape) and smoky, toasty notes that move on to tobacco. A nose of great class. The palate is absolutely fantastic: the profile is heavy and opulent, with empyreumatic notes strongly marked by tar, rubber and hydrocarbons (petrol), with smoky notes of roasted wood, roasted nuts, coffee, tobacco and leather. Baked caramel and molasses add a touch of bitterness to this dark, intense but extremely well-balanced profile. The alcohol is perfectly integrated. The finish seems eternal, at once sensual on spices (vanilla, licorice, anise) and hazelnut, and intense on a darker profile, focused on leather, smoky wood and dried fruit. This complexity and depth are echoed on the palate with bitterness and petroleum aromas. An absolutely incredible rum for an unforgettable experience.

Stunning nose with an impressive balance and complexity. Palate lacks a bit of round notes and feels slightly too much dry. This sample comes from a recently opened bottle and might evolve in a good way. I feel like it has more to offer with oxydation.

Review by Jarek
The dirty Caroni notes are present on the nose, but rather restrained. Delicious fruit and spiciness predominate. Still surprisingly fruity on the palate, with some acidity. There is a slight minty note on the finish. Very tasty and balanced.

Integrated alcohol is the only big prop. Then mid watery, sour...come on, there are more and better Caroni bottlings. ... A zajem rostl. Caroni patri do kategorie rumu "you need to try before you die". Doporucuji, Caroni je opravdu unikatni rum.

Yesterday we had a great evening in my friends man-cave. Lots of laughter and wonderful rums. Also a rum with heavy oak. With a drop of water more flavours are released and after 30 minutes it gets even crisper.

Vielen Dank an Jakob. Alles oberstes Level 🤤😋

re-tasted, now I have an opinion. I have a bit of a love-hate relationship with the Caronis. I like the style in general but they are overrated and overpriced imo. A nicely balanced rum, less complexity than The Last or the 1996 Paradises, more on the cask side, wood, caramel, leather, not much fruit, somehow a light rum. Quite complex on the nose, more simply structured on the palate. Want a Caroni? Go for Velier 36th release. previous notes 😅: not a tasting day today, I am doubting the samples today

Elegant very dry woody roasted Caroni, elegant on nose, complex and powerful on palate, rather dry and woody but I like it that way, excellent! Even better after some time rested in the glass.
