A rum discovered thanks to RumX and brought back from Italy by a friend at a low price. A dark color and a very expressive nose where I was expecting Caroni and where it was instead fruit that presented itself, raisins and figs but also tropical fruit. The discreet notes of a mechanic's workshop on the nose are revealed in full on the palate, Caroni in flagrante delicto. A motorcycle repair shop in full sunshine amid trees bearing all kinds of fruit, tropical and otherwise. The music is tropical and the sun is beating down. The finish is long, never-ending, with fruit or typical Caroni notes, depending on how you look at it. With a hint of smoke and a little acidity that gives it liveliness. A very clean Demeroni, with obvious Caroni notes, but little or none of the dirt. Like a 1995, for example the "Ancient Mariner", or even a 1996 with a little less exuberance all the same. In direct comparison with another Demeroni, I prefer it to Le Gus't 65.7%. I really like it! And the value for money here is absolutely exceptional!

Great combination of oily, dirty Caroni notes and the heavy, sweet fullness of a classic Demerara. Dark fruits, molasses and spicy wood on the nose, accompanied by slightly smoky notes. Full-bodied, sweet-spicy and complex on the palate with hints of leather, tobacco and dried fruit. The finish is long, warm and intense. An outstanding bottling.

Very nice stuff. Caroni dirt combined with some (Diamond ?) sweetness. Dirt, fruits, a bit of caramel. Alcohol is redicously well integrated providing a smooth and silky mouthfeel. Definitely a (not longer hidden) gem.

A very good Demeroni, an exotic fusion between a Demerara rum and a Caroni. Indeed, the profile is most deceptive: the nose is very empyreumatic, smoky, rubbery and with notes of bitumen. This is followed by sweet, chocolatey notes, mild spices (vanilla, nutmeg) and tobacco, mingling with hazelnuts, caramel, wood and dried, tropical fruits. A very complete, dirty and greedy nose. On the palate, the attack is lively, intense but very aromatic. Rubber and tar leave no doubt that this is Caroni once again. However, tropical fruit (mango, pineapple), hazelnut, dark chocolate and dark oak bring the typical Demerara sweetness. The alcohol is present but very well integrated. The profile is as puzzling as it is delicious. The finish is warm, spicy and smoky, even terpenic, but still retains tropical fruit, sweetness, wood and chocolate. It remains dirty, salty and terribly drinkable with its mixed Demerara and Trinidad aromas. A complex, expressive profile that's truly interesting and original, and easy to drink. It's unlikely, however, that a Caroni cask could have got lost and been labelled as a Demerara rum - the resemblance is, as with Le Gus't bottlings, far too great.

And that's not Caroni? Unbelievable! Incredibly successful rum. I've never had anything like it in my glass. Nice and bacony on the nose, nice and dirty on the palate. With the emphasis on "nice" in each case. Round and perfectly balanced, the streaks in the glass are so oily that they don't want to run down. A dream. Please forgive me, but I am so blown away by this gem that I have to give this rum its highest rating yet.

Demerara? Caroni? We are somewhere in between, but those who like both will find an extremely exciting bottling here. The dirty Caroni notes are even quite dominant and present themselves at the forefront, especially on the palate, there is tar and rubber full here. In addition, the heavy Demerara sweetness - that definitely gives a few subjective sympathy points from me.

A great Diamond. On the nose, I still have some of the Caroni suspicions, but then no more on the palate. Reminds me strongly of the V&M Diamond 2001s. Great, dark, full-bodied rum. A little smoky on the back, which prevents it from achieving a higher 90 rating. A clear recommendation to buy and drink.

Wow! I would not have expected this, extremely drinkable, complex and delicious. Could easily pass as a 98 Caroni blind, sherry finish brings a nice, creamy sweetness to it without being too dominant. Alcohol is perfectly integrated! Overall, really a very successful rum with an excellent price-performance ratio! Would have really liked to have a bottle here ...

RumX Advent 20.12.22Geile blind tasting. Had guessed the Caroni Replica.alcohol very well integrated. From Demerara I taste and smell nothing. Unlike the bottlings of Le Gus't where yet still sweetness and other influences are tasty, I find here full broadside Caroni. Delicious. Otherwise, you spend several hundred for something like this.

That is times a changeling! Blind I could have sworn to have a Caroni in the glass or at least an extremely dirty T.D.L! The palate and aftertaste confirm that even! But no! A Demerara rum. Great, I like it very much!

The nose is clearly a Caroni, perhaps a touch more dried fruit. In the mouth then extremely spicy and massive coffee. Strong, but very good. The finish is a bit short. Great rum! Thanks to Bonn!!! There I will look around for a bottle....

The nose is initially buttoned up as if the tar has been lying on the road for ages, but after a few minutes it opens up and alongside those dirty Caroni notes, the sherry cask comes through and brings a nice balance. The dirty notes are present on the palate, but are coated with a good amount of passion fruit. I can no longer find the sherry cask and the 67% alcohol has probably sunk into the tar somewhere. The finish is relatively dry and salty, and here the finish comes through again, which I also like very much. The aftertaste on the palate is also very pleasant 👍👍👍

Palate Oily, intense, roasted, wood, balanced, medium spicy, light tar, light rubber, prunes, faint chocolate, medium spicy. Finish Very long and warm, wood, light smoke, prunes, light chocolate, faint tar, light rubber. Extra note. Blind I would have said this is a Caroni 😊

Of course after the Le‘Gust Demeronis we needed to follow it up with the Gran Torino :D Very similar profile with all the dark & intense Guyana notes with the fruits & machine shop from Trinidad. Needs a bit time in the glass to open up and let the first alcohol burst disappear. Surprisingly dry/astringent on tongue and finish, but it fits. Needs more work to get behind the dryness & alcohol compared to the Le‘Gust, but I assume this is because of a frshly opened bottle and will only get better over time. Too bad this is so hard to find!

Franconian Tasting Gang - 23.11.2024: The first time I was allowed to try this rum was as part of a RumX advent calendar... and I was immediately impressed! But I was completely wrong in my assessment, I was sure I had a Caroni in my glass. Today, with the bottle in front of my eyes, I think I can clearly taste the sherry cask. But apart from that, it still tastes like Caroni. So nice and dirty, with rubber and tar. Great stuff!

3 dégustations, je l'adore ! Une bombe restée sous les radars. 👃 Explosion empyreumatique ; huiles de garage, combustible pour poêle à pétrole, diesel, station service, pneumatique sur l'asphalte. Un aspect plus végétal ensuite sur l'essence de térébenthine et la mastic gum. Un peu de fruits tropicaux trop cuits (mangue, papaye). Beaucoup de sucre brûlé sur la crème catalane. 👄 Toujours toutes sortes de saletés fossiles et végétales. Puis des fruits tropicaux surmûris. Beaucoup de fruits tropicaux. Des pêches glacés. Un mélange de sucre brûlé et de vanille trop cuite. Du thym résineux. Transition vers la finale avec du cacao Van Houten mélangé à de la gelé de menthe (After Eight). ⛳ Beaucoup de menthe blanche, eucalyptus, huiles essentielles médicinales, vicks vaporub. La pêche se veut plus confite. Que cela soit au nez ou en bouche, l'on est plus proche d'un Caroni mixé à un TDL 2001 & 2003 qu'à un Demerara classique. Très surprenant mais l'ensemble est très bien maîtrisé. N.B. : coup de ❤️ absolu, +2 points après redégustation. Un Must have dans le style ! Toujours toutes sortes d'hydrocarbures en premier nez, puis avec l'aération, beaucoup de fruits tropicaux (mangue, papaye, maracuja), du thé glacé à la pêche comme sur un TDL 2001, des agrumes aussi (orange sanguine). Bouche très sale puis explosion de pêche glacée, de thé à la menthe, d'eucalyptus. La rétro-olfaction est juste dingue, sur des petits piques de bonbons acidulés et fruités à souhait qui tapissent le palais. I need others bottles 🥰

I would like a bottle of this bottling. Slightly dirty nose, rubber and wood. The taste is less dirty than the nose, but still a bit "TDL" annoying, paired with fruit. Nicely complex.

After all the good reviews, I am very excited about the sample. On the nose, there are indeed nice dirty caroni notes, paired with southern fruits and freshly caramelized sugar. Like fresh crème brûlée without the vanilla. And the Caroni profile actually continues on the palate. It's hard to believe that there isn't a little Caroni in here. I would love to have more of these fine, affordable pieces from post-2000 Guyana.

Trotzdem 3 Punkte hoch, das hat er verdient.

The Gran Torino is strongly reminiscent of Caroni on the nose due to the present rubber and tar aromas. On the palate this is somewhat relativized and chocolate, spices, caramel and wood also accompany the dirty notes. A very beautiful and unusual Diamond/Demeroni.

Kaum zu glauben, dass das ein Demerara Rum aus Guyana ist. Sehr Caroni typisch dreckige Noten in der Nase und im Geschmack. Eine leichte Süße kommt aber dann doch noch dazu. Für mich ein spektakulärer Rum mit einer kleinen Anzahl von Flaschen (leider).

I like it extraordinarily well. Really very, very Caroni. Also somehow reminds of dirty Armagnacs. Demerara characteristics actually rather quiet and in the background. Sherry does not interfere at all but fits like a glove. Still cool. More of this please. It would really be a great trap for a blind tasting.

Die dreckigen Noten sind am Gaumen präsent werden aber ummantelt von ordentlich Passionsfrucht. Das Sherry Fass finde ich gar nicht mehr und auch die 67% Alkohol sind wohl irgendwo im Teer versunken. Im Finish relativ trocken und salzig hier kommt das Finish dann auch nochmal durch was mir auch sehr gut gefällt.

A Diamond in Caroni fur. Everything is here, dirt, rubber, sweetness and creaminess. I would never have guessed 67%, more like 55%. Extremely complex, balanced and expressive. Ein außergewöhnlicher Rum. Selten hat ein Guyana-Rum so einschlägige Raucharomen. Und es wirkt stimmig und ausgewogen, denn die Raucharomen sind nicht überpräsent, sondern lassen noch Raum für anderes. Im Mund allerdings stört es mich dann doch etwas, dass man diesen strengen, chemischen Gummi- oder Teergeschmack hat. Im Abgang fällt positiv gebrannter Zucker auf, der eine süße Komponente einbringt. Mehr als 8.5 ist heute nicht drin. Im leeren Glas bekommt man viel Gummi.

Also wenn das kein Caroni ist weiß ich auch nicht. Er kann auf alle Fälle mit vielen Abfüllungen mithalten bzw. übertrifft sie sogar und ist eine preiswerte Alternative. Schön speckig. Der Abgang ist lang und warm. Für eine bessere Bewertung sind mir die 67% etwas zu präsent. Aber das ist stöhnen auf hohem Niveau.

So, this is the hyped Gran Torino. Joa, on the nose and palate it comes across like a Caroni. Beautifully balanced and round. Already a very tasty piece. However, I can't understand the hype for the Caroni aroma profile here either, so for me it's "just" a very round, very good and nicely balanced rum.

Da ist er also, der Caroni aus Guyana. Und ja, es gibt absolute Parallelen. Vor allem da der Rum sehr dreckig ist. Vor allem am Gaumen ist es sehr intensiv. Die Nase ist eine 10/10. Viel Süße, mit intensiver Frucht, Würze und diesem Dreck. Am Gaumen viel Fasseinfluss. Das Holz wirkt verbrannt und ich bekomme viel Kohle. Der Abgang ist lang und trocken. Ein absolut fantastischer Rum. Es wirkt so, als ob das Fass sehr extrem ausgebrannt war. Dadurch viel Kohle und Vanille. Erstklassig!!!

Betörende Nase nach gummi und Dreck. Wie es mir gefällt. Wird mit der Zeit auch intensiver je länger mal ihn atmen lässt. Vielleicht ist es auch nur die Vorfreude. Dann am Gaumen ein aroma zum Dahinschmelzen. Warum habt ihr mir den nicht früher gegeben. Was ein geiler Tropfen. Für mich von dem demeraras die ich bisher hatte einer der rundeten. Ausgewogen aber allerdings auch ohne wirkliche kante. Trotzdem ausgezeichnet für mich.

How's this not a Caroni beats me. I got alot of the industrial notes at the forefront. Tar, smoke, rubber, then some dried fruit. After a while in the glass, you also notice the heavy underlying sweetness. From the fumes you can tell this is strong, but the alcohol integration is good.

Very complex, dark and sweet nose: blackberry, licorice, dried figs, Veloschlauch but also tropical fruits, I like it very much Palate: berry mix, plum, pneu, a little smoke, vanilla ice cream, cinnamon, hazelnut, a little tobacco and also a little floral on the finish, alcohol well integrated, very, very nice!

What a gem! The nose immediately reveals delicious tropical fruits with a hint of Caroni dirt in the background. Wonderfully complex. You can keep smelling it. On the palate, the demerara sweetness comes through. Tropical fruits, strawberries, Dark chocolate, salty are followed by metallic, dirty, and tarry notes, similar to those of the Caroni. These notes are not overpowering, but rather emerge wonderfully slowly in the background. These notes linger beautifully in the little bit dry and long finish. I find it a real treat, and I'm so glad I managed to get my hands on a bottle.

Slight hints of Caroni are indeed present. Somewhat dirty, burnt tires, but only in the finish or at the back. In the mouth rather typical Guyana with wood and leather, but the notes mix well with red fruits. Alcohol could be better integrated. Overall, the rum is a lot of fun. However, it doesn't quite get me personally for a better rating.

Zunächst ein Mal, wie bereits mehrfach erwähnt, bin ich kein Caroni Jünger sondern mag am liebsten gut gemachte Blends/oder sog. Navy Rum. Caroni Profile finde ich interessant und bereichernd aber an sich ist das nicht das ultimative Geschmacksprofil das ich im Rum schätze. Dann doch eher Tabak und Leder wie im Guyana oder die Fruchtigkeit der Jamaikaner. Lang genug gelabert. Fazit: Das vorliegende Sample ist vom Profil kein Caroni sondern ein Caroni auf Steroiden. Blind hab ich da weder Guyana noch PX. PX finish, wenn man es weiß, kann man noch irgendwie hinein interpretieren. 67 Volumenprozent sind mir als Navy Rum Liebhaber mindestens 10 zu viel um diesen Rum entspannt zu trinken. Auch hab ich nicht jeden Tag Lust Caroni auf Steroiden im Glas zu haben. Abgesehen von diesen beiden Einschränkungen die in meiner Person begründet sind ist der Rum natürlich geil für alle die das Profil mehr schätzen als ich. Daher ist meine Bewertung 8.5 Punkte. Caroniliebhaber dürfen aber beliebige Anzahl von Punkten drauf legen. An Tagen wo ich etwas besonderes/ krasses trinken möchte kann ich diesen Rum durchaus schätzen. PS mein Dank geht an dieser Stelle an Max für das mir zur Verfügung gestellte Sample!

What a discovery! When tasting this blind you would never guess Guyana, but Caroni instead. Nice notes of rubber, diesel, dirty and smokiness combined with the sweet, darker Demerara notes. Pleasantly surprised and glad I was able to get a full bottle of this awesome juice.
