Review by cigares
Spirits Museum Tasting 29th of March 2025. A beautiful, powerful and unique nose where notes of machine shop (tires and tar), fruit and a pastry side are in harmony. An oily nose with young wood. The initial palate is lively, but without the alcohol taking over too much. The aromas are complex and deep, with a surprising vegetal, almost black-tea character that is reinforced on the finish. A touch of burnt gum gives this rum a rather extreme character. The finish is long, fruity and slightly astringent and bitter. A very fine rum where I expected nothing. A little oxidation doesn't soften this powerful rum, but it does strengthen its cohesion and balance.

For 1999 this is rather intense. It's in the nose as I would expect a shinanoya cask pick to be. That is a monster of a 99 with all the right notes. Nose is not overwhelming but the palate hits you hard. Nice!
