Precious Liquors Caroni Tortuga No. 2 (East Asia Whisky) 1998

A well-liked Caroni with a twist — several tasters call it an untypical one, softer and rounder than the 1998 vintage usually runs. The tar, rubber and leather are there but dialed back, sitting under vanilla, nutty wood and fresh tobacco, with a touch of mango. At 59.9% the alcohol reads well integrated, and it drinks easier than most Caronis. A couple of reviewers wish it dug deeper.

Quite an atypical nose for a Caroni. Lots of vanilla, bourbon and nuts are added to the (rather more subtle) Caroni notes. Very accessible on the palate. A little lacking in depth for a top rating. Very well integrated alcohol.

#5487 13.07.2025 Second set with the guys after a wonderful dinner at a local Italian restaurant. Nose Balance, wood, light roasted, faint rubber, light tar, faint cherry, light leather, spice, dried fruit. Palate Oily, balance, wood, faint smoke, light tar, light rubber, light roasted, light cherry, faint chocolate, faint pencil shavings, faint mint, light earthy, spice. Finish Long, wood, light roasted, light cherry, faint mint, light rubber, faint tar. Empty glass Vanilla, light chocolate, light rubber and tar, light tobacco. Needs to rest for a while to really open up, a few points of the first release but still a very good rum.

Very round and balanced, stands out positively in the large number of 1998 releases. The typical HTR Caroni notes are recognizable, but embedded in an appealing bouquet of sweet tropical fruits, vanilla wood notes and fresh tobacco hints. Very balanced and therefore exciting to drink - a wide spectrum of heavy to fresh flavors is on offer here. Beautiful selection.

very good Caroni. balanced enough. so similar to Corman Collins series: 1988 21yr, Drink it Zipped it and the Black Cat Bar. same profile. just less some red fruits, berries or some hints of cocoa/chocolates. but more concerned and stronger, this one integrates some unimpressive elements. So I prefer this one to Corman Collins series. light and implicit, typical Caroni and easy to drink. great!

A rather atypical Caroni. Nutty, bourbon, agricole/brandy hints.

Tasted at Rum Love Festival in Wroclaw, 2024. Nose: Bold and distinctive, with notes of tar, rubber, leather, vanilla, and a touch of mango. Palate: Deep and intense, featuring tobacco, leather, burnt undertones, rubber, woody elements, spices, and a hint of coffee. Finish: Spicy and dry, with lingering leather and firm tannins.

A softer and sweeter Caroni profile than I would expect from a 1998 vintage, but still a nice and complex rum... nice spice notes, nicely integrated alcohol, wood, and hints of technique... a nice rum, but less Caroni than I would have liked...

Caroni

Avg Rating 8.8/10 620 Rums

No closed distillery is chased harder than Caroni. The Trinidad distillery shut down around 2002 and not a drop has been made since, but its heavy, oily, almost diesel-like rum became a collector obsession, carried to the world by Velier. Every bottle now comes from a finite, shrinking stock, which is exactly why the prices keep climbing.
