Rum Artesanal Jamaica Rum MRJB 1982

Sip this one slowly and neat — it's a 40-year-old Jamaican that lives almost entirely in the glass. The nose is the star: intense tropical fruit, peaches, wood glue and spice that belie the low ABV. Then the palate arrives soft, thin and short, with marzipan, milk chocolate and gentle wood. A lot of people found the mouth couldn't keep the promise the nose made.

A 40-year-old rum is not often in the glass. The nose surprises with a great intensity - the 45.1% is not felt here at all. On the palate, however, the expectation can not be kept - the rum has simply too little power and evaporates too quickly. The bottom line is still a great experience.

Exquisite nose with dense aromas of tropical fruits, fine wood notes, and elegant sweetness. Promising so far, even if it’s not a complexity firework. On the palate, unfortunately surprisingly thin; the flavor profile of the nose repeats itself and is complemented by roasted aromas, but the sweetness loses its delicacy, making it overall a bit weak in taste, even leaning towards slight wateryness.

Overall a very recommendable and complex rum with a long finish which I was fortunate to taste thanks to Andy Shannon, founder and owner of RumRatings, that gave me a sample. It’s a blend of pot still and column still rum bottled at cask strength, but as low as ABV 45.1%.

on the nose baked apple, allspice, baking spice, dried fruit and a slight acidity towards aceto balsamico. On the palate milk chocolate, leather, barrel, date. Liked it quite a bit. The rather thin 45.1% does not necessarily seem watery, in this respect everything ok.

This one was a bit disappointing. Comes off very light/thin and I think age killed it somehow.

Looking at this standalone and with sufficient time to breath, the nose is surprisingly intense based on the very low ABV. Nice and complex blend of fruits, wood and spices with no single component overwhelming the mix. Quite enjoyed this. Unfortunately, it can’t quite keep up on the palate and in terms of finish. While there is surely a lot to taste, both feel very mellow and can’t translate the very nice nose into a truly amazing rum.

Expert review by Zucker und Zeste

Despite the low ABV, the MRJB is very intense on the nose. The Jamaican origin is unmistakable, with dominant aromas of fruit, wood, and tobacco. All the aromas are nicely intertwined, and the smell really makes you want more. However, it can't keep up on the palate: the rum is incredibly smooth and the wood note is surprisingly muted for its age (just think of the 1991 KFM or the old Appletons), but overall the taste is quite thin. At least for a bottle that costs 900 euros per liter. The age undoubtedly makes this rum something special. But it's not a bottling you have to try. Price: 449 euros per 0.5 liter.

Expert review by The Dunder Hut

An incredible nose of tropical fruit, wood glue and peaches. Wooden cask with typical spicy notes. Some sweetness like the one from dates. That makes you so excited. And then you tas a boring flat and unenthusiasticly woody rum. What the fuck happened in between???

No rum is more imitated than Jamaican rum. This is the home of funk, the fruity, overripe-banana intensity that drinkers call hogo, made in the biggest pot stills outside Irish whiskey. When the rest of the Caribbean moved to the column still, Jamaica kept the pot still as its house style, and that stubbornness is exactly why its rum is so prized today.
