Foursquare ECS XIX Sovereignty 2007
Most tasters land in "very good but not extraordinary" territory here, and a few call the classic ECS profile a touch predictable. The Oloroso sherry casks push chocolate, dried fruit and toffee forward over the usual Foursquare oak and spice. At 62% it comes out swinging on the nose — nearly everyone says give it rest and a few drops of water, and then it settles into something warm and complex.
The community says- Chocolate and dried fruit
- Oloroso sherry depth
- But: Sharp neat

A nose worthy of the great Foursquare, precious woods, tropical fruits, chocolate caramel, very light solvent. The perfect balance between gourmandise and powerful rum. On the palate, the pleasure is on a par with the nose, comforting with its chocolate, caramel and sweet coconut, and powerful with its wood and spices. Long finish on the same notes. Extraordinary, I could drink gallons of it!

Beginning somewhat alcoholic nose... Sherry comes through well makes it more fruity and slightly sweeter in comparison ... After a bit of time in the glass, the spiciness fades a bit and it seems more harmonious ... The sherry cask has done a good job and brings mMn the typical Foursquare character something forward and makes it different (which is very welcome in view of the countless bottlings) prices beyond the 100€ I see as excessive.

Square, firm, with notes of cocoa, vanilla, sherry, molasses and coffee, not very persistent, but round and balanced. After resting it becomes more spicy. Good, but not in my league
Review by crazyforgoodbooze
Very, very tasty, albeit quite typical foursquare! But it's definitely very easy to drink and doesn't offend at any point. The sherry finish is also not so extremely dominant here and doesn't overpower the rum. Beautiful!

Although this rum spent a very long time in sherry casks, the finish is rather subtle. Very interesting that other Barbados rums with shorter sherry finishes have taken on significantly more (sweet) sherry character. A good Barbados rum in the classic style. Lots of chocolate, rather spicy, subtle caramel with just the right amount of fruit. On the palate, the spicy sharpness dominates a bit, but otherwise it’s round enough, as there are also pleasant roasted notes present. Very good rum! Sherry finishes push the fruit to the background and bring more spices and roasted aromas forward.

09.05.2025 Retasting at our local tasting with Hannes from Whisky Watcher. ----- Still like it a lot ----- At the time of release the price was very good for the quality you actually get. The nose is fruity with oak and vanilla trailed by chocolate. If you don't rest it then the nose will be alcoholic and you'll miss the subtle notes. The palate is complex and well balanced with oak and fruits and I like the peppery spicyness which is followed by vanilla and chocolate as well as a light note of espresso. Leave the empty glass and whiff it after a while to enjoy fruity and chocolate notes. The finish is long and warm with oak, dried fruit and a hint of chocolate.

Overall a fantastic rum described in three words, sovereign dry and oaky. We were some friends teaming up at Cane Rum Society in Stockholm to celebrate Foursquare Appreciation Day. We started up with tasting of the four different ones seen at the added photo under lead of our friend the Swedish importer Lars Renbjer. The fourth out was the Sovereignty (ECS XIX) which was released on November 2021 celebrating Barbados Independence Day (November 30th), which makes the name of it understandable. It’s a molasses based blend of pot and column still rums aged for a total of 14 years with 3 years in ex-Bourbon and 11 years in former sherry casks. Bottled at ABV 62%. Picture: The four Foursquares included at the tasting at Cane Rum Society in Stockholm.

Very nice FS. Finish works well here - accompanies the classic FS notes very well adding some red fruits and depth.
Review by TheJackDrop
Coconut butter on the nose for this very fine foursquare, perhaps the best and most balanced... except for a little veil of alcohol that sometimes stings on the nose... that I've tasted so far. Then the red and yellow fruits and a few spices in the midst of a fairly supple wood are there on the palate. Nice finish, but perhaps a little short on length!
Review by mto75
reminds me spontaneously of the gentleman's cake from the bakery Voigt around the corner. Chocolate, caramel, and also fruity (raisin, prune) on the nose. On the palate also a lot of 'sweet stuff' without actually being too sweet. A good representative of the ECS, on the level of the Shibbo or Redoutable and clearly above the Indelible.
Review by zabo
A pleasing typical Foursquare. Needs a bit in the glass to develop. I'm not usually one to add a few drops of water, but I would recommend it for this one. Again, a great CubaLibre mixer. But I would still prefer it neat.

And to finish today, a really nice Brett. Pleasant notes of vanilla and chocolate on the nose, plus spicy. On the palate, too, wood and roastiness are added. Very tasty.
Review by TheRhumhoe
A very tasty Foursquare, which starts with a hint of solvent in the attack, then reveals itself with a very greedy pastry profile, carried by chocolate, vanilla, caramel, toffee, praline, burnt sugar, toasted notes and dried fruits. The greedy profile is found in the mouth, creamy and oily as desired with spices, chocolate, cookie and caramel in particular. The alcohol is very well integrated. The finish is long, suave and expressive on spices, chocolate, caramel, with a salty touch, tobacco and mocha. A rum that has depth, greed, complexity and that will not remain available for long.

Rum Friendly Club Advent Calendar, Day 8. A pleasant nose of pastries, cedar wood and overripe fruit, apple, melon and banana. The first palate is marked by overripe fruit and pastries, then the alcohol makes itself felt but in balance. The finish is moderately long, still balanced, with the wood very well integrated. An easy but very good rum, with alcohol and wood very well integrated.

Review by Henry Davies
It’s another cracker from Foursquare. Really very well balanced and drinks well below its ABV. Nice blend of vanilla, oak, and spice on the mouth with a medium to long finish. It’s less exciting than Redoutable to my pallate but somewhat more approachable. The nose is molasses, ok and chocolate, which reflects the mouth and taste well. Good level of oak and vanilla into the finish, very good and may be a 85 on further tasting.

Review by Righrum
One of the best ECS so far. Sherry cask influence is pretty noticeable but integrated. Coconut and caramel, but also nail polish and red fruit. Drink side, it is mainly the same, just a bit more woody
Review by Piotr Ignasiak
Much more intense than Shibboleth. Starts with red fruit and spices and quickly turns oakey and chocolatey. Very enjoyable.
Review by Jakob

A very pleasant change from the classic pure bourbon aging. On Foursquare a novel aroma, like a candy bar with cherry and liqueur. Flavor-wise, it's also a big departure from the classics thanks to the sherry finish. I like the otherness. Warm finish.

Good, unfortunately too expensive and too quickly out of stock.Does not come close to Empery or Principia.

Birthday drink the 28th of July! Now this is the Foursquare I know. Very well integrated ABV, and it has a sweetness to it in the nose. I found some notes of coffee, tropical fruits, and vanilla. Very well balanced

Tasted against the Raconteur ... this one is not much worse.

Coming back to review this again. I loved it when I first tried it but have struggle to justify this initial rating from earlier in my rum journey. Being mid-way through my second bottle I think it’s a good rum but just not top tier. It needs some taming and unlocking with by adding water as the alcohol and flavours at the 62% come out swinging. Initial view (had rated 9.0): The sherry flavours add a little sweetness and additional complexity to the usual foursquare spice which blends really well. Very enjoyable.
Review by Santo
I find that Foursquare doesn't marry very well with the sherry cask and that the integration of the alcohol is average.

Longueur moyenne.

Too much sharp imho ... Foursquare je destilerka z Barbadosu produkujici uzasne rumy ke kazdodennimu popijeni. Je to rum, ktery oceni zejmena rumari, kteri maji plne zuby cukru a hledaji jemny, nasladly rum plny kokosu, vanilky, cokolady a karamelu. Proste prijemne a nijak agresivni chute.

A very good foursquare. Enjoyed it a lot. Full bodied and very tasty.

English: Foursquare Exceptional Cask Selection XIX Sovereignty 2007 is a 14-year-old Barbadian rum, aged for 3 years in ex-bourbon casks followed by 11 years in Oloroso sherry casks. This maturation process imparts a rich and complex character to the rum. The nose is intense, presenting notes of dried fruits such as raisins and plums, complemented by hints of dark chocolate, vanilla, and subtle spices. Woody aromas with touches of aged leather and nuts add depth and sophistication. On the palate, it is full-bodied and expressive, with dominant flavors of dark fruits, bitter chocolate, and spices. The pronounced oak presence and dryness are balanced by sweet undertones of caramel and vanilla. The long finish combines spicy and fruity notes with a gentle bitterness, inviting another sip. Aroma: caramel base. Vanilla, foundation, pear, green grapes with bourbon nuances. Taste: Typical foursquare vanilla notes. The alcohol comes through, followed by nuts, mainly walnuts, and dark chocolate. It's okay, but I think I like it best at this alcohol level. Finish: Spicy and long with oak nuances. A subtle baby powder flavor on the finish.

A great Foursquare, everything is there what you would expect. After some time it’s gets a little boring to be honest. It is „just“ a great prototypish Foursqwitu nothing extraordinary to add.
Review by Alan Bertoli
Adoro Foursquare. Molto buono.
Review by Michal S
Interesting a little sharper Foursquare, not as slick as other fills. Wood, dried fruits, vanilla, well integrated 62%.

Klassisch Foursquare: Gut gemacht, aber ziemlich langweilig…
Review by Alexander Rasch
My first Foursquare was the 2007. It really impressed me back then and I always enjoyed drinking it. After more than 2 years, I no longer find the ECS profile so exciting. Everything is very similar and the prices are a joke. I prefer the pure bourbon storage. There's quite a lot of wood influence here. I think 12 year bourbon is a perfect match for Foursquare... I'll be doing a Foursquare cross tasting soon so that I can examine the differences in detail.

Official foursquare. Nice balance, great texture. Sweet & complex aroma. Some marmalade, toffee, spices, dry fruits, little bit of nuts & lot of wood. Some cherry wood, & sour cherry in the taste, with hint of chocolate. It's not the best of the rums, but it's still complex, interesting & good balanced rum. Recommended to try.

Thats my go to Barbados Rum. My very favourite. Very complexed, strong but incredibly smooth. Can’t go wrong with Foursquare
Review by David Sharman
Quality as usual from FQ but feels bit over-oaked. I also don't pick up as much of the Sherry cask that I was hoping for.
Review by Matiss
Wonderful expression from Foursquare distillery. Expressive, bourbon heavy with a suble, but noticeable sherry influence, when water is added a bit, there sherry notes become more vibrant, more interesting adding dried fruits and pleasant sweetness that compliments the bourbon cask. Worth every penny!

Foursquare mam celkove opravdu moc rad. Za me jeden z nejlepsich FQ😍

Dommage
