The Whisky Jury Hampden HD MJH3 2012
Don't come to this expecting a Hampden ester bomb — it's a low-ester MJH3 mark, and that's the point. Sour pineapple juice, banana chips and berries sit next to black pepper, allspice and a whiff of plastic and wood smoke. One taster was "positively surprised by the complexity," finding older-tasting depth you don't usually get from a low-ester Hampden. Fruity, spicy, and different from the current high-ester crowd.

Here is the winner of my little MJH3 tasting. In general, the MJH3 Mark didn't knock my socks off, the decision was very close. All 3 rums were very similar in profile! This one was a touch better than the competition in all respects.

Tasted at Liquid Leuven ‘25 It opens a bit atypical on the nose for a low ester Hampden. In addition to all the expected, typical markers such as pineapple juice, berries and plastic, it offers more complex aromas usually found in older material. I wouldn’t be half surprised if something got blended in at some point. Unfortunately with casks changing hands it’s impossible to ever know for sure. The palate continues in the same trend. Sour pineapple juice and banana chips combined with a hefty dose of black pepper, allspice and incense. Bresilienne nuts, light brown sugar and fresh banana lead into a medium length finish with a touch of plastic and wood smoke. I’m honestly positively surprised by the complexity.

02-09.04.2022 This was crazy week, where some friends and I rented a nice summerhouse on Rømø. The plan was to go nuts for a whole week with different rums without going overboard. The final agreement came to 6 rums a day and then enjoy nice walks or ferry rides during the day. Day 7 Notes Medium dark in colour. Nose Fresh, light wood, faint smoke, fruity, light pineapple, light apple, light caramel, spice. Palate Warm, medium spicy, light citrus, light wood, light caramel, light ginger, apple, light floral. Finish Medium long, wood, fruity, medium spicy, faint chocolate, light citrus.

Good low ester brand. But lacks complexity and ester.
