The Duchess Uitvlugt Guyana 24 1997

People who chase old, woody Guyana rum with a twist will get the most here. Members find dried fruit, tobacco, roasted notes and a clear Cognac-cask influence bringing grapes and a "certain elegance." Several call it an easy sipper despite the age; the wood and 55.3% alcohol lean dominant, and a few felt the ester fruit gets buried by oak and bitterness late.

The community says
  • Cognac cask depth
  • Dried fruit & tobacco
  • But: Very wood-forward

Woody, Cognac-cask Guyana for wintertime sipping Well-liked overall: dark, roasted, grape-and-tobacco Uitvlugt with real Cognac-cask character. The common gripes are wood-heavy finish and alcohol that isn't always fully integrated.

Rum-X Calendar 2024 Day 4 Not an easy one today! I have Worthy Park and T.D.L on the nose 🤪 With more standing time, the typical WP banana note dominates. Then completely different again on the palate. I can't categorize it. Lots of tannins and barrel, plus slightly sour. Long finish with lots of wood. No idea what it is, possibly Guyana, Port Mourant? I quite like the intensity, but the profile is not my cup of tea. ----------- Second tasting: alcohol seems better integrated today and I find nice notes of resin and herbs on the palate (+2) Nose: super fruity nose with sweet tropical fruits! Reminds me of New Yarmouth Vidya. Glue is also present. Very nice and relatively straightforward. Palate: the alcohol is very present and unfortunately the fruitiness is almost masked by the wood and bitter notes. However, there is a nice interplay between fruity and woody notes. Finish: long and dominated by wood, but fortunately the fruit still shines through. Very good rum, unfortunately I don't find the alcohol particularly well integrated.

Edit: Day 4 RumX Calendar 2024 Totally guessed Clarendon 🤦‍♂️ Totally off the mark. Blindly, I would have given it another 8.4 despite a wrong guess So everything stayed the same Today three Uitvlugt from 1997 24yr (RX11475), 1998 22yr (RX8122) and 1999 14yr (RX6548) in parallel in the glass. In contrast to its competitors, the Duchess has a beautiful dark color, while the others are very pale. In terms of taste, the Tamosi is just ahead of the Duchess. Unfortunately, the Kill Devil cannot quite keep up with its competitors.

On the nose, it smells like encaustic, the memories of the oak floors we used to wax at our grandparents'. Notes of almonds, dried apricot and tobacco appear as the airing goes on, then white grape with sweet touches. On the palate, the dried apricot is lighter, we feel a toasted taste, a bit of woody taste as well, and the white grape a stealthy passage of liquorice. The final will be on the perfectly integrated cognac which has found its place.

RumX Adventskalender Tag 4 Nase ... Scharf , Aceton und Ester etwas leicht Blumigens . Junges getoastetes Holz . Mandarinen, Honig und etwas Papaya. Gaumen Alkohol deutlich spürbar. Etwas Ester , Bitternoten und Pfeffer. Fruchtigkeit im Mund nahezu weg ... Sehr Alkoholisch. Garnicht mein Fall . Nach 1h im Glas etwas mehr Frucht aber der Alkohol ist und bleibt nicht gut eingebunden. Abgang auch eher bitter .

RumX Kalender 2024 Day 4: Zurückhaltende Nase mit Dörrobst, Erde, Pilze. Recht verschlossen ansonsten. Erster Tipp alter PM, vermutlich kontinental gelagert.

Tasted as a 5cl sample. Wonderful smell of raisin/dried plum, oak, tobacco, caramel and spices. This one smells really good. Taste is similar, with a nice hint of marzipan and burnt sugar. There are also grapes, wood and spices. The alcohol could be a little milder, but that's complaining on a high level. The rum is really delicious and exciting.

Uitvlugt

Avg Rating 8.5/10 over 170 Rums

Uitvlugt is a ghost with the best reviews in Guyana. The distillery closed in December 1999 and its stills were hauled to Diamond, leaving the stillhouse in ruins, yet aged Uitvlugt rum is among the highest rated on RumX, with one Cadenhead 1964 reaching 9.9/10. For four decades this was the transfer point where every wooden still in the country waited before moving on.
