Hampden Rumclub Private Selection Ed. 24 HD Magnum <>H 2001

One taster called it "erst auf den zweiten Schluck ein Hampden" — and that's the character here: a 19-year continental <>H that reads gentler than most. Fermented banana and pineapple, buttery molasses, burnt sugar and a little citrus sourness. The esters are there but dialed back, with real cask roundness and a sweeter finish. Smooth enough to sip slowly at 59.4%, though a few wanted more fruit.

Wonderful <>H, which brings a bit of a winter vibe on the nose with cinnamon, vanilla, and allspice, further highlighted by candied fruits and buttery notes. On the palate, you first taste the burnt sugar, followed by the typical markers. Really good rum and a real bargain for my price!

In the other glass, the Ed. 17. The closeness of the two casks is unmistakable. Both have 19 continental years under their belt, with the Ed. 24 having an additional half year in the HD 92 cask of the Ed. 18. Honestly, I have to say that even side-by-side it's really hard to spot differences on the nose. Surprisingly, I do notice differences on the palate. The Ed. 24 feels a bit fuller-bodied, with more sweetness in the finish. Maybe it's just the 1.4% higher ABV rather than the extra finish... it definitely earns one more point compared to the Ed. 17 😉

Nose again (like the other RC) with some sour and citrus notes, but less prominent and complemented by candied fruits. So far I liked all out of the 2001 <>H batch. Looking at a close field: KD > TB > RC-M > RC

8,7:On the nose, esters, solvents, funky, fermented tropical fruits like banana and pineapple, buttery, sweet molasses with honeycomb, roasted wood notes like pastry, marzipan, spicy with allspice, bump into our nosetrils. On aeration, citrus fruits arise, slightly sour, some candied and figs, the molasses is flowery, grassy, a bit dark with black tea, licorice, some unindentified medicinal notes are present, vanilla, anise, brioche and nuts are out. 8,6:On the palate, the attack is funky with esters, syrupy, a bit astringent, fruity with fermented tropical fruits like banana and pineapple, citrus fruits, later papaya, buttery, sweet with honeycomb and roasted wood notes like nuts, burnt sugar, perhaps crème brûlée, cookie dough, spicy with vanilla, allspice, anise, slightly smoky. The molasses is grassy, flowery, vegetal with briny olive, as rubber is burnt. 8,6:The finish is medium long, dry and tannic, with roasted oak, smoky, spicy, fruits like citrus, melon, esters, varnish and phenol, grassy, flowery, earthy molasses, candied..

Amazing how the finish makes itself noticed, even though the finish actually comes from the same area. On the palate, you can sense it being a bit less sharp, maybe even rounder, with a bit more barrel influence. Whether I like it better than the original without the finish is hard for me to say right now. As a fan of high-ester rums, I do like the strong esters, which are a bit more subtle here. Probably the decision just depends on the mood of the day.

A very nice <>H that develops a dangerously easy drinkability thanks to its exceptionally smooth texture in the mouth. It does seem a bit tame, but that means you can keep this delicious drop in your mouth for so long that it’s almost completely absorbed by the mucous membrane, allowing you to discover every corner of its quite diverse flavor landscape.

Surprisingly nuanced on the nose when it comes to spices, more balanced in terms of fruit and on the more subtle side for a Hampden. Nice finish with sweetness. The finish works really well here.

This one waited for me in a covered glass, in a closed cabinet (for letting it breathe while I send my kids off to bed), and I could still smell it. The profile is nice, not too heavy and not too light, very fruity. The alcohol did not have any burn for me, which I liked. The only thing bothering me is that rotten fruity component, that so many love, but that I sometimes find distracting.
