Old Brothers Hampden Jamaican Rum (The Nectar) HJF 2002
"Glue, tropical fruits and bubblegum" is how one taster summed it up, and that fits. This 18-year Hampden HJF leans banana over pineapple, with varnish, baking spices, roasted pastry and a fresh minty finish. Tasters love the fruit and the tidy alcohol integration; a few note the 53.6% reads a touch watery for a cask-strength Hampden.
The community says- Juicy tropical fruit
- Great alcohol integration
- But: Reads slightly watery

Nose is delightful with lots of fruits (tropical fruit jam - if such thing exists) nicely balanced against wood and roasted notes. Just the right amount of funk and aging. For me quite up there in terms of Hampdens. Very enjoyable on the nose as well. Again, nicely balanced with lots of fruits (for me more banana than in other Hampden marks) well rounded from the cask and bottles at an approachable ABV without feeling diluted. With the bottle opened for c. 1/2 year, this is still excellent. More smoky notes on the palate, moderating the fruitiness a bit.

... Hampden, the legendary Jamaican distillery that produces rum as well as alcohol for perfume. In all the rums from this distillery you will taste wild esters, after which your whole organism will soak up the smell of golden tropical fruits - mango, papaya, pineapple, peach. One of the "must try before you die" rums

Once again a very tasty bottling that really suits my taste. Pure or as a mixer, it shows its best side. I think it's a shame that you can no longer get hold of it. I would definitely have bought it
Review by DaveLamb
Amazing flavors of powdered rouge and menthol, heavy vanilla and herbaceous, spice (with pepper, cinnamon… and baking spices). The dried fruits was fresh, uncooked or not even dry completely, with an aroma of olives and tea and unknown spices. woody, very complex. The complexity is the highest of the several, slightly higher than <>H, and is sufficiently open to not be closed at all. But the pleasure is a little bit lower. The smell-taste consistency, in addition to the intense tropical fruit notes, there are deep vanilla with tea and unknown plant/spice notes. The order of tropical fruits'presentation is slightly different from typical Hampden (HV, Continental Age, etc.). Overall, the flavors are complex and very layered, fulfilling my expectations of Hampden.

Solid fruity (rather berry) Hampden

Hampden HJF 2002 by Old Brothers reminds me of a mix of Juicy Fruits chewing gum with a bit of mint and minimal menthol. The alcohol is well integrated. Nice and creamy and definitely an exciting mark.
Review by Adrian Wahl
Tried with its younger "brother" RX12021. In my eyes, the 2008 is clearly better. Price-wise, the nectar HJF is completely over the top anyway. 85 is my limit for the rating.

06.11.2021 Another visit to "Den Danske Rom & Whiskyfestival and once again with special access and many very drunk people both days. Notes. Very good release. Super fruity with a light touch of mint in the profile. The palate is spicy yet well balanced and fruity. The finish is extremely long and kind of fresh.

Review by Maxence
Definitely another philosophy than the 2001 : less extreme, less funky on the palate but more balanced and sweet thanks to a masterclass reduction. A superb Hampden for sure ! 🇯🇲

8,8:On the nose, esters, solvents and varnish, intebse, funky, overripe tropical fruits like banana and pineapple, citrus fruits, flowery and fresh molasses, roasted wood notes like pastry, cookie dough, spicy with baking spices, bump into our nosetrils. On aeration, the minty molasses brings briny olive, red fruits arise, with raspberry, strawberry, the rum becomes slightly pungent, the fruits also candied, marzipan drops by. 8,6:On the palate, the attack is fruity with overripe tropical, citrus and red fruits, glue and esters, slightly bitter with briny olive, the molasses is herbaceous, flowery, the wood roasted, resinous, smoky with pastry, cream toffee, spicy with vanilla, peppery, 8,7:The finish is long, dry, slightly tannic with various overripe fruits pairing roasted wood, smoky, spicy, salty and fresh, minty molasses, dark with black tea..

Delicious Hampden. Slightly artificial nose, pleasantly low acidity. Fermented overripe with lots of other fruit on top of the usual suspects. Can be drunk without hesitation if you can still find it. Great rum.

Insgesamt starke 88 Punkte.

Interesting Marque: HJF is no longer produced and comes along with 826 gr/hl AA Esters, so somewhere between HLCF and <>H. On the nose fruity, banana and passion fruit come to mind. Besides that also baking spice and clotted cream (like you get with scones). The fermented and the gluts are relatively subtle here. Very spicy on the palate, citrus next to it and slightly bitter mocha on the finish. I like it a lot, if only there wasn't the lingering impression that the 53.6% tastes kind of watery. Even if it is brute, braver would have been the 76.6% cask strength.
Review by TheRhumhoe
Another very good Hampden from Old Brothers. Older than the 2008 HJF, more woody, vegetal and pastry notes are felt in addition to the tropical fruit and solvent notes. This impression is confirmed in the mouth, with more spicy and spicy notes as well. The finish is fresher and minty, slightly salty. An old and elegant rum, which constitutes a very nice reference for Old Brothers and Jamaica.

Glue, tropical fruits and bubblegum. Bloody brilliant!

A very greedy nose with tropical fruits ! Very very good! In the mouth more accessible than I would have thought. A real pastry. A slightly spicy attack that quickly gives way to smooth flavors. 2nd tasting and I like it even more 😍 One of the favorites of the year 2021

Alkohol top!
Review by Jakob
Lots of fruit, nice ester load, but overall pleasantly round and balanced thanks to the not quite so extreme alcohol strength. Pleasant overall impression, great release.

Google reseach tell me that this Hampden mark HJF is no longer in production. 17 years of tropical maturation plus 1.5 of continental maturation in bourbon barrel. You have to let this rum sit in the glass for while, so it opens up more out of the "typical Hampden palate". On the nose: First it was typical Jamaican rum notes like pineapple and banana, but after sitting in the glass you get citrus notes and strong baking notes like pastries and maybe cookie dough. Pleasant on the nose. Taste:Citrus and peppery at first. Then you get mangoes and overripe pineapples. A little bit of woody notes pop up. Palate changes towards pastry notes, yet remaining those fruity notes. No complains about diluted abv. Finish : Woody, minty, hints of coffee. Light and finishes quite dry with little bit of pineapple and minty notes. Medium finish If the quality of HJF mark were somewhere near as this one, Hampden should bring back this mark. More interesting and richer than most of their current marks, and this one was diluted one.
Review by ...and a bottle of Rum.
Quite dark for its age. Amazingly fruity on the nose. Foamy bananas, almost savanna-like strawberry-cream sweets. Then solvent, but very well balanced. Great, I could sniff it all evening. After a while, the esters become a little more present. On the palate, the esters are only medium-bodied according to the Marks. Some varnish, slight acidity, again more banana than pineapple. A herbal note in the background. The finish is unexpectedly short. Some ice-candy-like freshness remains on the tongue. Wonderful nose! Nose 92, palate 88, finish 83. In total a strong 87. Beautiful bottling with a slightly different side of Hampden. Ahead of its time in terms of price.

A really good Hampden! Pleasant ester, delicious fruit basket and nice heavy creamy oily! Top!

A very fine Hampden bouquet that could really have used more power.

Review by Djehey

Toller Hampden. Absolut ausgewogen. Alkohol gut eingebunden.

Banana and Esters on the nose - also with hints of clover and old leather. Strong attack, a tad aggressive, but pleasant, pineapple, tobacco, a hint of sweetness - quite long finish. Overall very nice

Mature, rather relaxed profile. Not a top hampden, but a nice sipper....

This Hampden HJF 2002 has a beautiful lightness compared to the ones from 2008. It ticks all the classic Hampden markers and has good alcohol integration. It is very juicy to drink and one sip asks for another.
Review by Arnaud Faverjon
Review by Michal Jurka
On the nose, tropical fruits, banana, pineapple, passion fruit and orange juice!?, almost like a marmelade or multivitamin juice. Very little woody notes, esters or solvents of varnish. After a while it gives off a little vanilla and wood becomes stronger. The palate, little fruity acidic, wood is stronger, little roasted coffee notes, spices. Remarkable Hampden!
Review by Cédric Meyers
Very pleasant to the nose and this side sticky, solvent that resorts so in the mouth ... For me I like less than the 2008 of Esther and co.
