Nobilis Enmore (Versailles) No. 8 (Cavavin Belval) VSG 1990
Sipped neat, this is a wooden-still Versailles through and through: dark, smoky oak, pencil shavings, black pepper and licorice, with a lighter fruity edge of apple, lemon and a touch of almond keeping it from going heavy. Long finish, wet-wood and faint smoke. A couple of tasters wish it dug deeper — one calls it a little "monocorda," or one-note — but most rate the balance high.

Beautiful, classic Versailles profile with an excellent balance of pencil shavings, tea, citrus fruits, wet wood and tart spicy notes of pepper, licorice and anise. It certainly has its rough edges, resulting in an exciting complexity, as none of the notes are negative. The VSG 90 profile is of consistently high quality, as this bottling impressively demonstrates. A top representative of the vintage.

... Enmore - drive still, now just a functional still. Apparently the only wooden still in the world that enjoys great popularity. The Enmore rums have a flavour of ash, leather, heavy wood, which will delight especially the lovers of whiskey. And if in the traditional Guyanese way the producer adds a little molasses to the rum, you have a unique very distinctive and heavy rum in the bottle. One of my favourites.

You can taste all the Versailles wood pot still in this rum! Dark, woody, smoky and lots of spice to go along with it! The only note that doesn't make me give it a higher rating is that a little monochord throughout the tasting but if you want to feel what a pot still in wood can offer you this is definitely a rum to try!

A rather round Versailles that is on the astringent, woody side. Rather few fruity notes, little pencil. It is a little too flat for me, it lacks a little complexity.

a tedious process and dull finish. The price is out of line (seriously) and as a "VSG" it deserves to do better, especially considering it's 30 years old. Nobilis should put more effort into Versailles and show more sincerity. I won't try "MEC" at such a high price.

This molasses rum was born in 1990 in the Versailles wooden still of the now-defunct Enmore distillery. It was then aged for 30 years in a US Ex-Bourbon oak barrel in a continental climate, before being bottled in 2020 as a 53.8% BDF by Nobilis, in a limited edition of 213 bottles (selected by Cavavin Belval)! As a reminder, the still was later moved to Uitvlugt and since 1999 to Diamond, now the country's only distillery. Nose typical of the Versailles wooden still: dark-woody-smoky with lots of spice. Elegant nose with a hint of eucalyptus. On the palate, it's a little less strong on the burnt casserole side typical of Versailles. It's obviously spicy, but there's also a fruity profile (apple/pear) with a touch of almond. The finish is warm with a smoky woodiness. As I generally have more difficulty with Versailles, I find this selection excellent, with a beautiful nose and a palate that's not too heavy. All it needs is a little more length and craziness to make it perfect. See you tomorrow for our end-of-season BBQ!

Good. But not great. Absolutely not for this money.

Krásně ovocný a svěží profil Versailles. Ve vůni koření, dřevo, hobliny z tužek a ovoce. V chuti opět tyto ořezátkové tóny, s ovocem a dřevem. Profilem spíš lehčí rum, ale velmi mě baví. Takhle partička z nobilisu to prostě umí.
