CDI Caroni Trinidad LWR 1996
Surprise is the story here: this Caroni leads with fruit and flowers before the tar shows up. Members find green apple, cherry, caramel and violet sitting over the usual rubber and workshop grease. Several call it the "domesticated" Caroni — milder, rounder, sweeter than the wild 96ers. The rubber's there, just polite. A soft, atypical take on the mark.

This nose, too, has an agricultural side, with yellow fruit and unripe tropical fruit supported by an aroma of sewing-machine oil. It also has vivacity and a spicy, floral side. The palate is not very harmonious, with clashing aromas. You have to look for the mechanical workshop, present but in the background. The finish is quite long, with charming floral aromas (violets) that lift this rum in my esteem. One of the rare Caronis with flowers! Thanks to Steffen for the sample.

1996 crosstasting of continental aged releases: A very special release - this is actually the only known time, apart from the 1974 vintage, that the LWR marque was bottled. Interesting, but more from a technical point of view - a good release in terms of quality, but by no means outstanding.

Very accessible and drinkable Caroni. Rather on the sweet, round side. Personally, I miss the rough edges. Floral and anise notes dominate.

For me, too sweet and herbal for a Caroni and too little zest (ABV), relatively sweet. The workshop feeling is more like the workbench of a craft workshop from TV...too tidy. Subtle nose. Everything rather restrained except for the sweetness. More herbs with time.

02-09.04.2022 This was crazy week, where some friends and I rented a nice summerhouse on Rømø. The plan was to go nuts for a whole week with different rums without going overboard. The final agreement came to 6 rums a day and then enjoy nice walks or ferry rides during the day. Notes Dark in colour. Nose Fresh, sweet, light wood, faint smoke, spice, light floral, dried fruit. Palate Oily, sweet, wood, light roasted, light floral, spice, warm, light workshop. Finish Medium long, warm, sweet, oily, light floral, light chocolate, faint caramel. Extra note. This is a pretty sweet Caroni and an atypical profile. I'm not sure ir it's elderberry I pick up in the profile.

Not bad in its own right. Light, approachable and reasonable fruity. However, (and unsurprisingly) very much not comparable to a HTR profile we do crave from Caronis.

Rubber but unlike many caronis I know no worn burnt rubber tire but rather reminiscent of a fresh bicycle hose you just get out of its package. Surprisingly mild and pleasant. Nevertheless intense and complex

Unusually fruity / floral caroni. I like really well could only have a little more power. But the flavor profile is already very tasty mMn!

Etwas Werkstatt, dann leichte süße. Leider Recht flach

A fruity, round Caroni that is relatively sweet. However, it doesn't have the sweetness of burnt rubber, but a caramel sweetness that I haven't experienced from Caroni before. Overall, however, too round, too sweet and not dirty enough for Caroni. Unfortunately, what you love so much about Caroni is missing here. Nevertheless, not a bad rum and perhaps a good introduction for Caroni newcomers because it is smooth. But unfortunately far too expensive, the price matches the name at best, not the quality at all...

The typical Caroni notes of tar and rubber come through on the nose. These subside on the palate. Then some wood, caramel, leather and aniseed come through. The finish is relatively short with some leather and dark chocolate as well as a metallic aftertaste. It is definitely a Caroni and good. However, with (for me personally) a little too few rough edges. Deduction, as it definitely doesn't improve with more time, but rather becomes more one-dimensional.

A rather "light" representative of Caroni rum. The typical workshop notes are present. Rubber, tar but also metallic notes and polish. There is also a clear, fruity impact and sweet notes of burnt sugar and honey. Barrel/wood and leather in the medium-long finish. Successful, but does not quite come close to the top bottlings of other '96 vintages.

Very restrained on the nose for a Caroni. But it is still slightly there, this burnt, artificial plastic-like quality. Rubber and iodine fade somewhat into wax. There is also a distinctly sweet note of burnt sugar or caramel. It is quite fruity, reminding me of green apple with a little cherry. The palate is actually a little thin at first, then the slightly dirty aromas appear, but even here they are very restrained. Slightly bitter-salty, a little rubber, a little burnt. The fruit is again green apple with aniseed. The finish is quite short with a little plastic and black tea. Overall, a rather weak representative of its kind, especially of the '96 vintage.

This Caroni is an intriguing and unique expression, offering a more tempered, ‘quiet’ twist on the classic Caroni profile. As others have noted, the fruity and floral nose was unexpected, but ultimately a nice surprise. The delicate floral aromas will likely disappoint rum lovers who have a specific expectation when opening a bottle of Caroni. On the palate, it balances the classic industrial notes of rubber, tar, and polish with sweeter accents of burnt sugar, honey. While lighter in body compared to other Caroni expressions, I would not say that this is a disadvantage, though the result is a “domesticated” Caroni, one that is less wild but in its own way refined, delicate. The finish is medium to long - I do wish it could have been slightly longer! A floral ending that stands out from other Caroni’s I have tried, and which I enjoyed! Final thoughts: If you have a preconceived notion of what Caroni should taste like, this may disappoint you. This is not your normal Caroni profile, but stands firm with its own nuanced personality.
