Rum Nation Caroni Small Batch Rare Rums 1998
Here's the surprise: this is a Caroni where the sherry cask, not the tar and asphalt, does most of the talking. Expect dried fruit, a little sulphur, vanilla and only a subtle whisper of the classic rubber-and-smoke. Several tasters found it round to the point of thin, and one summed the nose up as better than the palate. An unusual, sherry-led take on Trinidad's cult distillery.

How does Rum Nation Caroni Small Batch Rare Rums 1998 taste?
Aggregated from 21 community reviews.
Sherry-led Caroni, round but a bit thin Most agree the sherry finish softens and slightly buries the Caroni character. Pleasant and easy-drinking, but many feel the cask took over what could have been more.

Aroma: floral, fruity with notes of coconut, sweet, rubber, smoky, asphalt, ripe pear, fresh apples, stood and smoky asphalt notes come to the fore, candied cherries / cherries, some kind of creme brulee appears, the aroma is very sweet dense and at the same time light. Taste: smoky-iodine taste, lots of fruit, caramel, very powerful smooth taste of asphalt, rubber mixed with fruit. Long bright aftertaste with notes of dried fruits, asphalt.

Nose is good,. Feels a bit thin on the palate, however.
Review by Leo Tomczak
Entry-level Caroni, which would certainly come across better without the sherry cask. Very round, almost too flat. Nice Sipper also for non-nerds.Price too high.

#4447 03.11.2023 got some nice samples from a friend and though small they're still really good. This one was a bit disappointing and the cask has taken over in my mind. What could have been a great release went a bit south. Fruity with nice spices and a hint of smoke. Would be a good beginners rum into Caroni because the traditional notes are wery subtle.

Tasted together with Leo Tomczak at the 11th GRF and can only agree with Leo's assessment here in all respects. The fact that this Caroni is not really successful, especially because of the finish, becomes even clearer when tasted in parallel with the "Slippery" (RX451), as we did.
