Chairman’s Reserve 1931 2017
One member calls this "easy sipping in the best possible way" — and that fits. It's a pot/column/agricole blend from Saint Lucia carrying tobacco, caramel, dried fruit, vanilla and a light grassy freshness. Round, balanced, mild for 46%. The recurring gripe is the finish that cuts off short. Plenty of depth for the price of admission, and a favorite Chairman's for many.

How does Chairman’s Reserve 1931 2017 taste?
Aggregated from 78 community reviews.
Balanced, round Saint Lucia sipper, short finish Most love it as a balanced, round everyday sipper with tobacco, caramel and dried fruit. Near-universal catch: the finish drops off too quickly, and several wished for higher ABV.

Most helpful positive review
A rum between Spanish, French and English thanks to a hybrid distillation. Well balanced and not too intense with a pleasant caramel and never cloying thanks also to the barrel/oak aroma with a coffee, chocolate and lychee/mango finish giving it depth. Medium-long finish.

Deceiving as can be A mix of flavors and styles without fusion or balance

Chairman’s best ! This one is the follower of the yearly 1931 editions. It’s like some of the editions a blend of pot stills, column stills and Agricole. I’ve only tasted the 84th edition, and thought that tasted a little aggressive and alcohol. This one is much milder and rounder.

Very balanced, very round, very smooth, very drinkable but, unfortunately, the aftertaste stops way too quickly, it's like a full stop after the initial and middle notes. It's a bit confusing, you want the flavor to keep developing but no, the machine stops completely way too suddenly. A shame. Not bad but you have to sip it at a fast pace because the flavor leaves you in a few seconds.

SLD hardly fail to deliver high quality bottlings and this is no exception. Very well executed blend showing classic Chairman’s notes in a very round and enjoyable package. This is „easy sipping“ and „accessibility“ in the best possible way. Dried fruits, spices, vanilla, dark chocolate and wood from the cask embedded in some (pleasant) sweetness. Even with this moderate ABV, there is quite some depth to it and complexity. Definitely recommend as a easy going introduction into SLDs profile.

Reminds me of the original Chairman's, but with more power and character. There's something that reminds me of Jamaicans. Roasted coffee notes with medium alcohol integration and medium length.

I have enjoyed this rum so far simply because of its round and delicate aromas and am therefore surprised at how many different facets it reveals on closer examination. It is very well suited both as an "easy drinking" rum and for a head-on analysis. A beautiful thing!
Review by Big Greasy Daddy
A very well balanced rum with a bit of st Lucia funk. Excellent sipper, the finish is a bit short and a higher ABV would help.
Review by Rowald Sweet Empire
Great nose. Very fresh scents: esters/pineapple/lime/lemongrass and galangal (laos). Floral too. Taste: more woodflavours. French oak. Roasted pineapple. Well balanced and delicious. Rather short finish though. The nose is a tad more interesting than the taste though. But great dram.

Easy sipping the nice way. I like it without being too enthusiastic. Just the right thing for a cozy get-together. The bottle also looks good. Really good in cola. The tobacco notes are nice. Suitable for mixing and sipping if you don't want a cask strength.
Review by ChristophFFM
Hard to fit into the categories. Somehow this is a classic and well done rum. Sweet and woody. Compared to "Legacy" this one is more smooth and sweeter. It tastes less green as the share of Agricole is smaller. It has a peppery vibe and finish. Interesting but I think the "Legacy" has more character.

There isn’t too much to say about this one. Just a solid pleasant rum. It’s more weighted towards the warm notes but is very balanced. This is a great rum for just hanging out, although I do wish it was cask strength.
Review by Solidfunk
Plenty of character here. Seriously plenty. Smoke, caramel, oak barrel. Loving this. Dark orange amber pour. Some hint of vanilla. Tobacco. Prune maybe, but light.

Rum acquired in Saint Lucia during a trip - easy for a metropolitan for 13 years in the DOM. Very good rum, tasty, with a degree of alcohol very well integrated. Ideal with a chocolate dessert for example. It is not very sweet. In the end, it's still a nice discovery of an "English" rum. Let's be open to different rums from the French West Indies

Read full review →This is pretty much near the top for me in terms of the 1931 series. Though I must confess I do prefer the recently released Whisky Exchange Chairman's Reserve Master's Selection , but only by a very small margin. This is still an excellent rum for the money.
