Hampden Rum Sponge No. 8 JMH 2001
Here's the surprise: at 55.4% this Hampden JMH sips gentler than you'd expect. The nose is loaded with glue, esters, overripe pineapple, banana and mango, then the palate turns fruity and funky with roasted wood, brown sugar and pepper. A few tasters do find the mouth a touch watered-down after that huge nose, but the fruit lingers for ages.
The community says- Rich tropical nose
- Funky esters

How does Hampden Rum Sponge No. 8 JMH 2001 taste?
Aggregated from 37 community reviews.
Fruity, funky Hampden that sips easy Loved across the board — a fruity, funky Hampden that drinks easy for its strength. The one recurring gripe: the palate can feel lighter than the intense, glue-and-tropical-fruit nose promises.

The 3rd Jamaican rum from Rum Sponge that I've had the chance to taste. The first two were very good. The 3rd is along the same lines. The nose is rich and captivating. Fruit, fruit, fruit, funky. How pleasant! On the palate, the alcohol is there, sharp. But the fruit is well present: a sweet pineapple, a very ripe banana. Then wood and pepper at the finish. This fruit stays very present on the palate after the tasting is over. It's honestly very pleasant. A candy that stings! Edit: despite several months in the sample, the rum has kept its power. The wood seems much more present to me than the first time. Very good.

... Hampden, legendarni jamajska destilerka, ktera krome rumu produkuje take alkohol do parfemu. Ve vsech rumech z teto destilerky ucitite divoke estery, po kterych cely vas organizmus nasakne vuni zluteho tropickeho ovoce - manga, papaji, anansu, broskvi. Jeden z rumu, ktere "must try before die"

This sample arrive with he previous one and I'd loved a bottle of this one as well. A very good take on Jamaica indeed. The nose is funky with ester and fermentation notes followed by fruits and sweet vanilla. The palate is also funky with ester, tar and varnish followed by fruit and woody vanilla. The finish is long and warm with wood, ester and lovely fruit.

8,7:On the nose, esters and glue, funky, fermented, overripe tropical fruits like pineapple, some candied fruits, grassy, flowery molasses, vegetal with olive, roasted wood notes, bump into our nosetrils, balanced. On aeration, banana, citrus and grapes arise, the molasses is fresh with tea, herbaceous, instead of grass, there is hay, roastedness brings caramel, roasted nuts, brown sugar, some smokiness. 8,7:On the palate, the attack is medicinal with esters, glue, rubber, funky, fruity with fermented tropical fruits like banana, apple, red fruits, later citrus fruits like grapefruit, the wood is roasted with caramel, brown sugar, oiky, spicy with allspice, slightly burnt, as the molasses is grassy, flowery, vegetal with briny olive. When the rum is well rested, hints of vinegar come out. 8,6:The finish is long, dry&tannic, dirty, chemical with phenol, the rubber is burnt, the wood roasted, smoky and spicy, nutty and tropical, red fruits overripe, the molasses vegetal with briny olive. Edit:13.6.26

I loved the nose. Funky as hell with a super well integrated alcohol. The mouthfeel is great too but I didn't find it as pleasant as the nose.

Wochenendtripp mit meinem Bruder in unsere alte Heimat Oelde in Gedenken an unseren Vater. Ein Hampden der viele Ester zu bieten hat, aber auch die tropischen Früchte Banane und Ananas sowie Klebstoff. Top Rum.

Very nice nose, pineapple, ester and funky.
Review by Maxence
Very nice nose both elegant and funky at the same time. Palate is very fruity and funky but the finish feels a bit too much metallic and toasted to my liking. Great continental Hampden overall and a good release from Rum Sponge.
Review by TheRhumhoe
A very good Hampden living up to the reputation of its Vintage. The nose is particularly rich and dense, with big funky notes of glue, esters, and nail polish but also an exotic fruitiness bordering on fermentation with pineapple, banana, mango, and papaya. Behind this opulence reveals a vegetal and floral note of olive and a gentle spicy breeze of vanilla. A nose with presence. The palate is an aromatic delight, especially with its radiant and exotic fruitiness (pineapple, banana, mango). The medicinal and funky side is present but well balanced, slightly bitter on the palate. The slightly vanilla, spicy, and caramelized side adds a lot of depth compared to the typical Jamaican character, which is very enjoyable on the palate. The alcohol is very well integrated. The finish is long, dry but varied, notably with a salty and woody side that pairs well with the soft spices, ripe tropical fruits, olive, and medicinal notes. The finish is round, well sculpted, and shows beautiful complexity to close the tasting. A generous, indulgent, and intense Hampden, a true pleasure in every way.

I like this rum very much

Small Rum Sponge Hampden JMH X-Tasting: awesome and complex Hampden with all the typical markers. Esters and glue are not too extreme. Overall very smooth, some might say watered down, but the finish lasts forever.
Review by Righrum
Another great continental ageing Hampden, that confirms this distillery is unbeatable wherever it is aged. Usual notes of ananas, vanilla and pastry on the nose, while drinking the esters are on the spotlight and some spicy notes appear too.
Review by Adrian Wahl
The idea of the blend I find good. Nose also really fine, but on the palate it is clearly watered down.
Review by Henry Davies
A restrained and dry nose, some glue, brown sugar, and tropical fruit. The mouth is fairly restrained as well, with deep oily and complex layers. Wood and some sap with a bit of oil. The finish is short with brown sugar, woody and then brings more tar and a sour note of sour peach at the end. A solid but not exceptional rum.
Review by Roman Lelek
The nose is as described by others full of vanilla and tropical fruits. The color is golden, maybe more like old gold. The palette - well balanced mix between funky esters ( grass, olive, glue ) and fruity tones of banana, vanilla, with hints of spicy pepper and wood. ABV around 50 is good for me so more rums like this one please.
