Velier Hampden Elliott Erwitt HLCF 2016
Most tasters land in the same place: a genuinely good young Hampden that drinks older than its five years, with the 60% ABV impressively well-tucked. Expect grilled pineapple, ester funk, pear, banana and a smoky, olive-and-glue edge. The recurring grumble isn't the liquid — it's that the pretty photo bottle often ends up in the collector's corner rather than the glass.
The community says- Well-integrated 60% ABV
- Grilled pineapple, ester funk
- Youthful rough edges

How does Velier Hampden Elliott Erwitt HLCF 2016 taste?
Aggregated from 81 community reviews.
Fruity, smoky young Hampden that drinks older Widely liked as a rounded, fruity HLCF with the alcohol beautifully integrated. A few say the youth shows some rough edges, and several feel it drifts toward collector-shelf territory.

Most helpful positive review
Stands out extremely positively in a direct comparison of the two2016 Hampdens, which were released under the aegis of Velier. Clearly more harmonious and with far better integration of the alcohol.

... Hampden, legendarni jamajska destilerka, ktera krome rumu produkuje take alkohol do parfemu. Ve vsech rumech z teto destilerky ucitite divoke estery, po kterych cely vas organizmus nasakne vuni zluteho tropickeho ovoce - manga, papaji, anansu, broskvi. Jeden z rumu, ktere "must try before die"

Very tasty! Great nose, in the first moment when you take a sip it has briefly a somehow unpleasant mouthfeel. However, this fades very quickly, then spreads a great flavor palette in the mouth! The rum develops from rather acidic ester notes to a sweetish pear with a slight eucalyptus note.
Review by Tschusikowsky
With a drop or two of water, this rum works wonderfully. It is harmonious but also complex. Rather on the spicy side and less funk. It seems older than the 5 years. The rum still has a very good PLV.

Cross-tasting with RX27 & RX11980 I have to raise my initial rating significantly. In direct comparison, better than the new Hampden HLCF Classic 2017, but still a corner behind the Velier HLCF 2010

somehow seems to have more than just 5 years under its belt. Very round on the nose, and there are many nuances to discover: fermented and candied fruit, pear, smoked bacon, olive, butter croissant. Smoky on the palate, mirabelle plums, pear, candied fruit and brine.

What I like about this rum is how well the ABV has been integrated. A very well balanced rum indeed. The price is stiil up among the others though. The nose is fruity with ester, waxes, honey, chocolate and vanilla. The palate is warm, complex and extremely well balanced with fruits, honey, sugarcane, chocolate and vanilla as well as a nice smoky touch. The finish is long and warm with pineapple, vanilla and again that lovely smoky note.

So, now I'm finally going to try it. Thanks SaibotZtar for the split 👌 The rum is relatively young. It clearly stands out from the HLCF Classic in terms of quality ... but on the other hand only so much that it's easy to understand why it was packaged in a bottle with a cool photo on it. That makes it look even better 🤣 Conclusion: Good, but overpriced. My sweet spot here would be 3-5 more tropical years, I think. I like the nose much better and more mature than the palate.

An amazing Hampden! Found it at my favorite bar in Copenhagen. The first thing I find that hits the nose is banana and chocolate. I got notes of fresh fruits, cocoa, citrus and vanilla. Very interesting Jamaican rum to me
Review by TheRhumhoe

Review by DeMaddin

Sampled at the 2024 Rum Love Festival in Wroclaw. The alcohol is smoothly integrated. It leans more toward a collector's item. Nose of esters, tropical fruits and vanilla. Palate and finish echo fruits, vanilla, and smoke.
