Pusser's Rum Gunpowder Proof (Black Label)
One member calls it "extremely underrated," and that fits the vibe here: a dark, spicy navy-strength Demerara built on molasses, burnt sugar, licorice, coffee and dark chocolate. The 54.5% is mostly well-integrated but there's a real alcohol bite, and the young age shows as a sharp edge. Plenty of people sip it, plenty keep it for a Cuba Libre or Painkiller.
The community says- Dark spice and cocoa
- Well-integrated strength
- But: Alcohol bite

Dark, spicy navy-strength Demerara sipper Loved as a punchy, characterful Demerara at a friendly strength — spicy, dark and versatile. Some find it too hot, sharp or licorice-heavy neat; a splash of water or cola tames it.

Nice nose of wood and spice with notes of chocolate and vanilla, in the mouth we find the nose well integrated 54.5 degrees, short length pity. Good value for money.

REEDIT: once apprehended, this little Navy on licorice and heavy flavors is quite pleasant. EDIT: I finally got the hang of it during this new tasting! Frankly disconcerting in pure English style, and quite nice. Gotta love the character. Nose: Molasses, brown sugar, caramel, nutmeg, coffee? On the palate: Coffee, coarse spices. Finish: slightly spicy, fairly short.

The smell and taste are strikingly different!

It’s possible to find the Gunpowder Proof in three different blends. The oldest one consists of rum from Guyana, Trinidad and Barbados. After that it came with a blend of Guyana and Trinidad rum. The latest one just consists of different rum from Guyana. The one I review here is the latest one. I think it’s quite complex with a good balance between sweetness and dryness.

With this rum must be mentioned first of all the PLV: for its price it is unbeatable and can not disappoint at first actually. The nose comes very spicy, dark and woody hence; together with its name I feel a bit transferred to the deck of a pirate ship. Together with a very sweet note (molasses?) Very inviting, I think. Also very spicy on the palate, though also alcoholic and less complex and inviting than the nose. For the price, nevertheless, top and also for various recipes a good choice, liquid as solid!

#5027 03.01.2025 Sampling a bit at home after a few days of work. Nose Medium intense, wood, light coffee, light vanilla, light earthy, cherry, faint honey. Palate Medium intense, wood, light roasted, light coffee, fruits, berries, cinnamon, light tobacco, maple, light prune. Finish Medium to long, wood, light roasted, oily, light spicy, light tobacco, light cherry. Needs to rest for a short while to really open up. The empty glass has light chocolate, caramel and raisin.

Review by DomM
Sweetness feels more well balanced in this higher proof ABV bottling.

Really enjoyable and great value, though I have a slight preference for the Black Tot at this price point for a navy rum.
Review by Rumpalumpa
I love Guyana rum, with its typical notes present here. The nose is lovely. Fruity and spicy. on the palate you notice that its rather young as its a little sharp indeed, but still a little woody. Finish is long with molasses forward and also chocolate
Review by Vincent D
Not unpleasant. The high degree gives it a little more interest than the reduced version, but it's still very sugar- and caramel-oriented. Very present alcohol, coffee, licorice. Woody. Slightly astringent finish.
Review by TheJona'Spirits

Solider Rum!

My first rum from British Guyana is the alcohol is very present as well as the coffee. The wood is badly melted. I don't know if it's because of the sugar but very nice length in mouth.
Review by Rhum Mirror 🇧🇪
We are well in the world of Demerara and Navy! It is fat with notes of bitter cocoa, spices and nuts with burnt wood. It is indeed a heavy and powerful molasses rum just in the nose, the navy side is well marked with a solvent and metallic side. Gingerbread softens and tempers the blend. Taste: It has character with its 54.5% rather full-bodied, strong and dry. Power and roundness. We are of course almond, cocoa, walnut but also prune and banana ... The side of roasted nuts is quite pleasant with gourmet spices.

Review by Godspeed
My go to navy proof of the demerara variety. Well integrated burnt notes, powerful flavor but never overwhelming. A controlled explosion of sorts. Needless to say an excellent choice for cocktails.
Review by rum_sk
Very full bodied and prominent on the palate I have to grab a new bottle for the painkiller. Big brother of its standard diluted counterpart. I love smell of guyana rum, especially pusser's. For me the smell is better than taste but that does not mean it's bad. It's all about raisins, cocoa, chocolate and caramel in the nose as well as taste. The taste is sweet but comes with a power of 54.5% abv. I have rated Original Admirality at 68 so I have to go a bit higher with this undiluted one- 70

07.2024 First impression: rich, complex, powerful Nose: chocolate, coffee, dark fruit Palate: powerful aromas of chocolate, spices, coffee, dried fruit spread out comfortably Finish: continuation of the flavors to a very round picture Overall impression: still a beautifully strong sipper that I should bring to the front more often from its place at the back of the shelf. 201? One of my first rums on my journey through Dave Broom's "Rum - the Manual" where I thought: my stuff!

I'm testing the most recent version here, so it's made with only rums from Guyana. I'm testing it just after finishing the three single-still samples from DDL. On the nose, there's dust, damp wood, chocolate, and dried fruit. On the palate, it's sweet and spicy, not very complex but pleasant. Smooth and spicy finish. For almost a third of the price of El Dorado's 40% single-stills, this one has absolutely nothing to be ashamed of. The difference in strength makes a big difference. I don't know if it's a must-have, but for the price, it's a very good buy. Paired with the Plantation OD, it works well in cocktails.

A strong dark smell, dark chocolate, fruity, coffee, a little alcoholic, very pleasant. Also in the taste is dark chocolate, spicy, slightly woody.A very pleasant rum.
Review by jules
Goes full throttle forward, both on the nose and the palate. Great rum, and not just for around 25€. I find the finish pleasantly strong and astringent in the mouth, with little alcohol burn; the finish lingers less in the throat than in the mouth. The alcohol is also well integrated. Even though the profile is somewhat rare, unusual, and maybe a bit "old-fashioned," I wonder why this rum isn't much more successful and better rated 🤔
Review by Michael Janek
24 rum 2022 in the aroma the strength of the alcohol and a little chocolate, nuts, vanilla, later wood and prunes and the alcohol is no longer noticeable at all the flavour caresses at first (honeyed), but then the tongue grates the grater and bites back and forth, the 54.5% is there on a rampage once the brut is gone, the flavour lingers for a long time it's definitely not something to sip all evening :-) aroma 3,5/5 Taste 4/5

I thought i must like it better than the standard blue label. These are very similar, but I do not liked heavier pronounced bitterness and alcoholic taste. Still great rum and fab value for money.
Review by MJ72
Review by Samuel Andersen
This rum has a very comfortable and approachable flavour, even more so, i find, than Pusser's blue label. I find myself returning to gunpowder proof fairly often almost as a palette cleanser in between different styles of rum. I find this rum to be very versatile and for quite a while it has been my go-to for experimenting with more rum-forward cocktails. Gunpowder proof is one of the more "homey" rums that I feel would make for a good rum to step off with for someone close to the beginning of their rum journey. I also find that gunpowder proof has qualities that would make it a fitting choice for a whiskey drinker.

For lower budget Europeans, this Demerara (Port Mourant wooden pot still) rum must be a true gem, because: 1. It’s pretty affordable and versatile. It’s a nice complex bass tones demerara sipper if you dilute it and optionally add a touch of syrup. 2. It fills the gap for US stuff we don’t have available in Europe and is called in cocktails (esp. if you have other usual cocktail workhorses to work with), like: - Hamilton 151 sub or any overproof demerara rum sub (I mix PGPP 50/50 with OFTD rum. You could buy Pusser’s 151 but it’s not necessary imo, if you don’t put cocktails on fire and 151 alone is way off balance in comparison) - Hamilton 86 proof Demerara sub (just dilute PGPP to 43% abv) - El Dorado 8 or similar low proof Demerara rum sub (sort of), if you mix PGPP 30:70 or 40:60 with some neutral medium aged rum (5y Barbados, Chairman’s R., or spanish style etc) and a bit of water and a touch of syrup to 40%abv. That makes this rum covering pretty much all Demerara cocktail calls. Saving you some extra bucks. Extra tip: Try 50/50 with OFTD and dilute it with water to 40-45%abv and a touch of cane syrup… a wonderful balanced dark sipper, puts me in a demerara happy place with a touch of funk.

Der erste Geschmack ist sehr gut. Süß, rund, dicht, erinnert an Weihnachtsplätzchen ohne Weihnachten zu sein, verfliegt dann leider irgendwie recht schnell in verschiedene Richtungen. Ich mag das wärmende Brennen am Schluss.

Extremely underrated rum in my opinion
Review by Rick Meyer
Fairly stout Demerara rum here. A few aromas I can’t define … mainly caramel and molasses. Something burnt for sure. Maybe for me this is more if a mixer … I just have much better rums for sipping.
Review by Tupiaz

Sample no.24 of the 24 days of rum calendar 2022. Sweet, strong and spices. These pot stilled rums are more intense on the nose and me personally find it very hard to distinguish the aromas. Palate is a kick in the teeth at 54,5% abv. and is full of spice, wood and esters. A bit of licorice notes and a warm burn in the end.
Review by PeixeGato
Rich and dark. Smooth and creamy mouthfeel with touch of spice. Strong coffee notes on the finish.
Review by Hogo Hobo
Fairly light nose, aroma of new sneakers and other plastics with a hint of wood, and coffee after it opens. Palette: strawberries! Undeniably strawberries, with a hint of nut brittle, and some sharper notes. Very nice. Relatively thin viscosity. Very short finish, strawberry bubble gum after it’s been chewed too long. Fun and uncomplicated. No regrets at the price.

Great Demerara flavors that are very complex. Yes it is young and you can tell, but I don't mind it for its intended use. Very good PLV.
