Banana, sour cherry and hot glue meet a tannic, syrupy sherry sweetness here — Hampden funk wrapped in Oloroso and PX. An experiment by Velier with a Sherry cask Hampden that has been getting a lot of buzz. There are typical Jamaican markers on the nose with tropical fruits, solvents and esters, but red fruits, especially cherry, are not far behind, followed by spice, wood and vanilla. The rum keeps that same funky frame on the palate, tart with red fruits and slightly spicy. The finish is quite long and dries the palate with tannins, followed by toasty and cocoa notes that complete this gourmet profile. Although it is a "light" mark, this Hampden has the merit of being original, greedy, mastered and that without betraying its terroir. The release price was also worth the detour.

Am somewhat ambivalent here.... On the one hand, quite exciting combination, on the other hand, for me not quite balanced !I do not really warm up to the sherry influence here! Certainly still a good rum and for the entry price a good PLV, but I'm glad to have only a sample and not a bottle2.TastingI'm sure now: the Pagos and I will not be friends

Exciting combination - fresh fruit esters meet heavy, syrupy sweetness from the sherry cask. The whole thing moves on a fine line, because the sherry influences are already quite opulent and put a rich stamp on the overall profile. In the end, however, everything remains sufficiently balanced in my eyes and I thoroughly enjoy it. Successful experiment.

This is a special one from hampden with this nice touch of sherry cask. Very good solid hampden. The alcohol and sherry cask is integrated very well. Unfortunately, I have to say that the second edition is just a hint better that the first edition 😵💫 btw this is just my opinion

Hampden is written on it, 1,200 bottles so sold out within minutes.but what's inside? It's about the latest release from Hampden with the name Pagos. A distillate with just under 400 esters (so rather a high LROK than a low HLCF) was allowed to spend four years in an ex-sherry barrel.The bottle was rumored for many months on the Internet and was this week Wednesday finally to buy for 79 €.For a Hampden only three years old not so cheap, but sherry cask and limited to 1,200 and gone is the thing.The nose is nice and the sherry comes through well, but the rather low esters are somewhat muted by the sherry.With 52% well drinkable, but I personally would like more ABV and more esters in the base distillate. A dream for Flipper ;) otherwise solid.After a year tasted again and deducted a point.

First release of hampden pagos! My personal taste really likes the note that the former sherry cask gives Hampden! I would have liked to have had a little more complexity in general! But as a first experiment definitely well done!

Alcohol could be better integrated, but still a nice Hampden! Just a bit too hyped and not worth the money in my opinion... The sherry finish clearly sets the tone here, you can drink it but I prefer Jamaica without finish.

Edit: So nun nochmal alle drei Velier Hampden Pagos aus 2022, 2023 und 2024 parallel verkostet. Die Unterschiede sind dann doch eher verschwindend gering und für mich als Fazit bleibt, das dann doch alle sehr Sherrylastig sind, der eine mal mehr und der andere mal weniger. Im Grunde solide, aber auch austauschbar. Franconian Tasting Gang Im Vergleich zu seinem Nachfolger fällt er leider ab. Der Sherry Einfluss ist hier deutlich höher und überlagert ein wenig den ursprünglichen Geschmack. Finde es eine sehr gelungene Kombination. Nicht nur ein entspannter Sipper für zwischendurch. Meines Erachtens ein wenig unterbewertet. Bin froh, dass ich nochmal eine Flasche zum vernünftigen Preis bekommen konnte. Danke an MrRumantic und danke fürs Sample an Olivia.

So now the sherry cask has also reached Hampden original bottlings and despite my aversion I bought it, you have to stay open to new.Unfortunately, I have been a little disappointed. Average Hampden, which got some spice from the sherry casks, which is mainly characterized by a strong cinnamon note on the nose. On the palate, however, clearly less present and thus less exciting, because it is then just a mediocre Hampden. On the other hand, I welcome the restrained sherry note, which is there, but does not slay everything, as you know this from many (especially cheaper) bottlings with sherry casks or finishes.Conclusion: Once again something new, but in total rather boring. After all, the price is probably appropriate.

A very intense nose of fruit that clearly reminds of cherry, a desire to taste it immediately. In the mouth, it is very good .... Still clearly in the fruits, iser, with a little oaky side, very nice and funky. On the finish, the cherry clearly comes back on a little toasted side. Cuckoo n summary a different hampden very very fruity, if you like cherry, it is worth it!

Boom! Just tested it and luckily just ordered another bottle from ebay at a reasonable price. I can only agree with the previous reviews. The PX content definitely has a valuable influence on the rum! Edit: I'm gradually realizing that the sherry bothers me a little. I have therefore lowered the rating from 9.5 to 8.8.

Young Hampden and sherry cask proves to be well compatible. Triggers now no cheers but here the sherry cask is the complement and does not completely determine the taste. The slightly different Hampden. Very pleasing.

Ein interessanter und schmackhafter Hampden (Pagos 2022). In der Nase sind attraktive Fruchtnoten wie Kirsche und Papaya zu vernehmen, welche wohl durch den Guten Sherry-Einfluss entstanden sind. Im Mund breiten sich neben der schönen Fruchtigkeit viele Holznoten sowie weihnachtliche Gewürze aus und werden von angenehmen Estern begleitet. Im langen bis mittellangen Abgang ist die Würze sehr präsent. Dann fruchtiger Sherry und viele holzige Töne. Gebäckaromen vergleichbar mit Brotrinde lassen das Ganze ausklingen. Ein würziger, funkiger Hampden mit schönen Sherry-Noten. Sehr zu empfehlen.

on the bottle unfortunately only sparse info, ie that the rum has spent in 500 liter barrels used for oloroso / PX maturation. On the nose, I quite like the interplay of sherry and buttery fermented ester notes (LROK, HLCF?). I find it even a bit more balanced than the recently tasted rum

Sherry doesn't stop at Hampden either. Am somewhat at odds with me whether this is necessary. In some independent bottlings, the Hampden profile matched the sherry cask to some extent. But it didn't really improve it. So too here...Nose: nice Hampden profile with esters, pineapple, fresh lemon and light vinegar notes. There are also the spicy, slightly smoky flavors from the sherry, which is definitely noticeable. This adds some currant, vanilla and wood.Palate: powerful and dry. You can tell this is a fairly young HD. Bitterly salty at first before the esters appear on the palate, then right away the sherry influence, which is pleasantly restrained overall. Pineapple and lemon zest, more woody and spicy at the back.Quite ok, but really doesn't need it.

Yet another Hampden, yet another review! The bold and fierce Trelawny profile cannot be easily tamed, even when the cane nectar is aged in sherry cask..the profile is indeed richer, with red fruits and some cinnamon, mainly on the nose and possibly in the finish, where it gets more sherry-style. An interesting experiment, although not one to die for. If you can find it for its original retail price, grab it..for more than that, i wouldn’t advice so :)

The next strong Hampden. On the nose, the typical tropical fruits such as pineapple and esters, with a hint of solvent. Also tropical fruits (pineapple) and esters on the palate. Alcohol is only too noticeable, which prevents a better rating.

I love Hampden rums, especially when the fruit notes stand out even if it’s a little out of balance as a result. It’s a personal preference - I just love it. This one has all the classic Hampden notes on the nose and palate that you’d expect. The classic esters and fruits are there but a tick more muted than some Hampden’s, especially on the palate. They are prominent but not in your face, much more in balance with the barrel notes. Some may prefer that, but I’m not in the camp. Still this is quite good because it hits all the notes you’d expect, just not a fave or ‘wow’ offering by their lofty standard.

I got two bottles of this rum today and considering the young age it's pretty good. The sherry has twisted this one so I'd say it's hard to identify it as a Hampden. The nose is fresh, floral and fruity from the pouring of the rum then continues with spices, varnish, ester, sherry and very light coffee notes after resting. The palate is fresh, sweet and oily with sherry, fruit, vanilla, cocoa and cane. The sherry notes are very dominant and hides the true origin of this rum. The finish is very long, sweet and warm with fruits, sherry and light oak. Price to quality upon release was pretty good for what you get. Unfortunately the price has taken a severe hike.

The nose is nice fruity but also alcoholic sharp. The sherry cask is also clearly noticeable. On the palate, unfortunately, again quite alcoholic and for Hampden unexpectedly little funkyness. For this all the more cherry barrel. The finish is again nice fruity and medium length. Overall not bad but too alcoholic for me for a better rating.

A very aromatic rum that has a classic tropical fruit Hampden nose, but add in some cherry notes. The mid palate is a mix of spices. The finish has oak for days. When the other flavors dissipate, you are left with oak.

A rather unusual opinion among nerds, but I simply love young Jamaican rums from sherry casks. And this one is a great example! Very tasty and balanced. Too bad I didn't buy a bottle back then. But maybe I'll get another supply at some point...

A lot of noise for not much! On the nose, esters, ripe fruits. It's funky but the wood and the sherry cask are very present.In mouth, it's very spicy. We are without any doubt at Hampden, the fruits and the esters are there. But the alcohol is not very well integrated and the sherry cask is too present.Medium finish, without much change, except a not very pleasant bitterness.In the end, too spicy, too much sherry, not enough greediness. A Hampden 8 years old or a Younger are much cooler for less money.First impression confirmed by a second tasting.

Very nice Hampden rum. The sherry barrels impose themselves a little too much here, otherwise the funky character would have remained even more. The longer the rum is in the glass, the more the sherry notes take the upper hand and the rounder and less funky the rum becomes.

I really like this rum, it’s close to the old Hampden Overproof in character and has a slight touch of rubbery asphalt that I really enjoy. - Two years since last tasting and I’m raising it even further. - 3rd tasting and this is still really good. - 4th tasting and I agree with myself above.

Hampden with a sherry cask finish just isn't mine. It's not a bad rum in principle, but it's too sweet for me. The fruity sherry note clearly comes to the fore, even if it doesn't completely cover up the young Hampden.

An der Nase sehr funky. Viele tropische Früchte, süße, etwas Holz und einiges an Ester die einem direkt in die Nase steigen. Am Gaumen sehr ausgewogen, es bleibt funky, Ananas, Banane, Ester und eine leichte süße. Tolle Kombi zwischen dem junge. Hampden und dem Sherry. Es harmoniert im Mund.

In der Nase sehr fruchtig, man nimmt neben dem dominanten Ester leichte Holznoten war. Im Gaumen bekommt man dann den starken Sherry Einfluss zu spüren. Diese harmoniert gekonnt mit den Estern und hält bis in den Abgang an. Gelungenes Experiment!

The hype creates an expectation that can only be disappointed at first, but Pagos is actually a solid and delicious rum. Addendum: A Hampden tasting, with Great House 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022 and 2023, plus the New Beginnings and both versions of the Pagos. The first Pagos is already sweeter and heavier on the nose, while the 23 Pagos is fresher.

Bottle is open for around 4 months now and it evolved to a perfect dram. The nose is just great, Sherry, Hampden and Vanilla, whiffs of a grassy wet oak beyond. On the palate by little sips it now shows off its true soul. Powerful, earthy Sherry with leather, nuts and much oak, PEZ-Raspberry, plum guided by the Hampden Funk. I had to upgrade this from 86 to 92. Enough time in an opened bottle and small sips makes this one best balanced. If you like the Hazelburn 2004 Fresh Oloroso 14 years Scotch Whisky, this one here is its equivalent in Rum. Edit 15.09.: Bottlekill, rest was best, 92 points absolutely confirmed. Great!

Von Beginn liefern sich die Hampden-Funkyness und die klebrig-süßen Sherryfässer einen harten Kampf um die Vorherrschaft auf der Aromenlandschaft. Dadurch werden die Ester zwar ein wenig in ihrer Intensität eingebremst, bekommen aber noch genügend Raum, damit das Ganze nicht in eine rein fassgetriebene Geschichte abdriftet. Ein sehr gefälliger, runder und süffiger Jamaika-Rum, der mir ein kleines bisschen besser gefällt als das zweite Batch.

Full of hampden Overripe flavours with plenty of punch and personality with the Sherry influence and high ester. First taste put a smile on my face as it danced around my mouth. Not sure everyone will like this but a nice, full bodied rum. Just ordered a second 👌
