Romdeluxe Limited Batch Series Cuba 2015

Most Cuban rums come across mild and Spanish-style, so a young cask-strength one this wild is the surprise here. Virgin oak drives it: yellow tropical fruit (papaya, passionfruit, peach), coconut-vanilla and a syrupy sweetness up front, then walnut, brown cake and a leathery, lightly smoky wood finish. At 65% it bites hard neat, and several tasters found the opening hot and sharp before it settles.

A small but fine Cubatasting is on the agenda today. Ever since I tried the Valdespino, I've been looking for a similar profile (tobacco, leather, dark fruit, old wood, fireplace, light smoke, full-bodied, oily and fat texture) at cask strength. Let's see if we can find it here. A Venezuelan has also sneaked in =P 1st Plantation Cuba: Dances out of line in terms of color. Fruitier and not at all what I imagine my Cuban to be like. The sweetest and also by far the most boring of the tasting. 75 pts (second tasting: -2 pts) 2nd Rome Deluxe Cuba: A positive surprise at.first tasting and still very tasty. Has the aromas mentioned at the beginning, also some yellow fruits, plus slightly creamy and quite wild on the palate. Not overly complex, but very pleasing. 86 pts (second tasting: +2 pts) 3rd Wudramclan Cuba 1992: Tastes like the consistent evolution of Romdeluxe's Cuban. No longer as wild, somewhat more one-dimensional fruit aromas, much more leather and tobacco, some ash. Very short and fruity-ashy finish. 85 pts. 4th The Whisky Jury Cuba 1978: When this came out I had high hopes: great bottler, almost unbelievable key data, that color... In this comparison, it seems to me that the Cubans not only lose their impetuousness with age, but also their variety of aromas and structure. All the fruit in this rum is burnt, strangely enough this rum is very light on the tongue and not fat and oily as I had hoped. The tobacco, the wood and the fruit literally turn to ash in the mouth. Somehow I like that, but on the other hand it is not at all an upgrade to the Rom Deluxe Cuban, if you compare them directly. 85 pts (third tasting: -4 pts) 5th Cadenheads Dictador 26 yo: My Cuban in a Venezuelan coat! That's how I imagine it! Great aromas, great oily, fat structure. Tobacco, old wood, some ash (for me still and fitting in the aroma spectrum). <3 88 pts. Many thanks to Mto75 for the samples!

First of all, thanks to Gunnar for the unscheduled sharing. Unfortunately, not really a Cuban highlight for me. On its own, it's a little too alcoholic and meaningless for me. In CubaLibre it does what it should and delivers solidly.

I haven't had many Cubans in my glass that I've liked in any way. There was maybe a Sancti Spiritus once, but that was it. Usually too simple for me, too flat, too fizzy, too "Spanish". This one is different... Nose: very fruity, floral and sweet, with a fine spiciness and woody notes. Comes across quite fresh with a fruity mix of papaya and passion fruit, peach and kiwi as well as coconut butter with vanilla. The sweetness is reminiscent of sugar syrup. Pleasantly woody and spicy on the back with a fine smoky note. The virgin oak has done a great job. I like it quite a lot for a young Cuban. 8.4 Palate: oh, initially quite alcoholic and sharp-edged and with a rather bitter start. But once that's gone, softer, almost creamy textures come through. Nutty in the direction of walnut, also reminds me strongly of classic brown cake or fruit bread. And clearly woody, strong, but not old; Virgin! If it wasn't so tangy at the beginning, it would score much higher. But only 8.2 For what it is - a young Cuban - it is really good and deserves a good 8.3 points

19.11.2021 Celebrating my birthday at a bygone local bar with dinner as part of the experience. Notes Medium dark in colour. Nose Wood, light roasted, spice, faint chocolate, light caramel, dried fruit. Palate Warm, wood, medium spicy, lightly dry, dried fruit, light citrus, light caramel, faint chocolate, light earthy. Finish Medium long, round, wood, light roasted, raisin, light citrus, light earthy. Extra note. Needs to rest for a good while or the ABV will bite.

Second tasting and I like it. Maybe a bit too much bite for the rest of the palette but at 65% it should be.

Not your average Cuban ron, led by distinct citrus notes, completed by marshmallow, vanilla, and an interesting tar and astringent finish

Cuba taught the world to drink rum light. This is the island that gave us the Daiquiri, the Mojito and Bacardi, and the smooth, column-distilled Spanish style that became the most popular rum on earth. Today its rum is entirely state-run and shut out of the United States, yet Havana Club still ranks among the Caribbean's biggest brands.
