Schotman's Barrel Selection Caroni 1999

Tar, rubber and warm licorice up front, with more fresh fruit than most Caronis — cherry, mango, dried apricot cutting through the dirt. Several tasters call this their dirtiest Caroni yet, but a fruity streak and well-integrated alcohol keep it from turning into a chore at 61%. Definitely not an everyday pour, but the people here who chase the tar-and-plastic side of Trinidad love this one.

The community says
  • Classic tar and rubber
  • Fruity for a Caroni
  • But: Heavy for some

How does Schotman's Barrel Selection Caroni 1999 taste?

Aggregated from 35 community reviews.

Dirty, tar-heavy Caroni with a fruity streak Fans of the dirty Trinidad style rate this highly — loud tar, licorice and rubber balanced by real fruit. A few find it too heavy; it's clearly not a beginner's Caroni.

RumX Advent calendar, 11.12.2021, blind. Definitely Caroni and a very dirty representative. Blind then even settled on this bottling, I think it's great. Original review: Tasted for the first time at the 10th GRF in Berlin with René van Houven, thank you very much! A great Caroni that somehow inspires me. Certainly not as spectacular as other boards, especially from the well-known great vintages, this Caroni convinces me above all with its versatility. The subtle and rather fruity nose turns into wood, coffee and other bitter notes on the palate and less clearly, but definitely there is then also banished rubber and tar, so that it is also clear here: Caroni! Half a barrel and only 70 bottles, that's when the "want-to-have" instinct kicks in!

Now I get the "Caroni tastes dirty, like tar and plastic" comments, this one at least gives me the impression that this is what people mean, when saying that.

Very classic Caroni profile, positioned not only by vintage between the common 98 and 2000 profiles with distinct tar and rubber notes combined with menthol and a bit of caramel sweetness. A positive surprise, a really good bottling. As Steffen Mayer revealed in his Caroni bible, the same base product was bottled for Whisky Import First Cask, Schotman, and Wigman Caroni. Flavor-wise, this only partially holds true; the basic aroma is clearly related, but the expressions tend to go in quite different directions. Exciting and a bit confusing at the same time. In a direct comparison, the Schotman and Wigman bottlings clearly stand out for me over the First Cask, whose very astringent finish is its downfall.

RumX Advent calendar, 11.12., blind, First impression: this is a Caroni! And at 60%. That's right and I know it. I already found it good with René's rarities. This is now confirmed once again. Nose: intense and complex, yet round. First of all, typical Caroni tar and iodine with singed plastic but at the same time with a sweet caramel note and a certain fruitiness, like cherry with dried, sulphurized apricot. Dry tobacco with vanilla and a very light vinegar note at the back. Palate: full-bodied, intense and really tasty. Initially, phenol and iodine predominate with light mint, slightly salted and toasted. Then fruity redcurrant and lime. At the back again rubber and bodily violet and some black tea. Surprisingly good!!!

Caroni

Avg Rating 8.8/10 620 Rums

No closed distillery is chased harder than Caroni. The Trinidad distillery shut down around 2002 and not a drop has been made since, but its heavy, oily, almost diesel-like rum became a collector obsession, carried to the world by Velier. Every bottle now comes from a finite, shrinking stock, which is exactly why the prices keep climbing.
