Cave Guildive Clarendon Jamaica Rum (Clarendon) 2007

Blue cheese in a rum glass — that's the one nobody forgets. Nicknamed "Stilton 2007," this Clarendon puts a savory, funky mold-cheese note next to overripe tropical fruit, rubber, plum and smoky oak. It needs air to open, and at 68% it hits hard, though most find the alcohol well integrated. Salty, dry, wildly original — one taster even swore it drank like a Caroni.

Monymusk to me is usually a rum that comes in pretty strong and this one is no exception. The nose is definitely Jamaica with rubber, varnish and lots of fruit. There is also some nice wood there and a bit of funk. The palate is also fruity with smoky wood and nuts, caramel and vanilla. There is a hint of leather there as well. The finish is long with smoky wood, spices and raisin. The leather is more present in the finish than on the palate.

Nicknamed "Stilton 2007"- takes some time to breathe, but then offers a fascinating combination of overripe fruit, wood, spices and...blue cheese. Sounds strange, tastes (to me) all the better for it. Completely own profile, which will certainly divide the tastes, but for me the basis for one of the - thanks to its uniqueness - best younger Clarendons up to here.

#12th dec RumXCalendar Blind tasting: Nose: Solvents, a hint of esters, cedar wood, fruity, peaches, trop. fruits Mouth: minty like some fisherman friends, fruity, spicy (first sip was like fruit schnaps), woody Finish: long, woody, minty, toaated, barrel notes, tannins, vanilla, honey I think it should be from Clarendon/LP ca.60% 15 years of aging
