West Indies Planteray Extra Old XO 20th Anniversary
"A gateway rum" is how members keep describing it, and that's the whole story. Coconut leads — some call it a coconut bomb — backed by vanilla, caramel and ripe banana, all softened by an obvious dose of sugar. It goes down easy at 40%, more round than complex. Newcomers adore it; drinkers who've moved on find it sweet and one-note, but almost nobody dislikes the glass.
The community says- Big coconut nose
- Very smooth
- But: Added sugar

Very smooth and delicate, tropical fruits, a hint of cinnamon and some caramelized sugar. The only thing i would wish for is a longer aftertaste, other than that it is a really good rum.

Eigentlich ganz lecker. Alkohol gut eingebunden. Genau mein Geschmack

After a long time again an entry-level classic in the glass. As a starter, I found in very good and extremely pleasing. The sugar ironed everything smooth at the time. Meanwhile, it is less sweet. Instead, an unpleasant alcoholic note. Unspectacular on the nose, unspectacular on the palate, short finish. Still a spectacular bottle. Conclusion, poorly integrated alcohol, very thin and short-lived flavors. Nevertheless, I would still recommend it to any beginner.

Delicious and a lot of tropical fruit. Vanilla is coming through in this one and it sticks for a while. A super rum to sit and sip with your friends. A very good beginners rum in my mind,
Review by Stefan Persson
Overall a too sweet and a too dominant coconut aroma and taste in my opinion. Kept it in my Rum bar just because my wife liked it, but nowadays she has left the over sweetened rums for more pure rum just like me.
Review by Eugene227

All my Tastings and Scores are purely based on “Rums under £50”. I rarely look at Rums over £50 for my YouTube.

I expected more. In the end, an average rum.

Very nice rum, first plantation rum i have tasted en really trilled about it. Sweet en long tasting with notes of pineapple and coconut. Really tropical but still very complex
Review by LukaŽiga
7,8:On the nose, it's the toasted (or even fried) coconut that immediately comes to the fore, and is increasingly present! Vanilla, baking spices and orange add to this rum's gourmet character. 8:On the palate, it's also greedy and soft (without being too sweet). It's the vanilla that takes center stage here, relegating the coconut to second place. The texture of this rum is also gourmand. 7,8:The finish is dominated by coconut, and not just a little. There's also the sensation of something fatty and unctuous, some drieness....
Review by Werner10
A great rum for what it costs. I love the finish, a bit sweet, chocolate, vanille and some roasted flavors.
Review by Tim
This rum always goes... a sweetened classic for beginners. On the nose a lot of caramel, cream toffee and coconut with banana. In addition, but also wood and glue, which, however, quickly evaporates. In the mouth pleasantly mild with subtle sweetness. Again tropical fruits, caramel and sugar. Certainly a good entry-level rum, if not one of the better ones, since it is still okay in terms of price and dosage. However, there are already good unsweetened rums for the price.

This was one my first rum tastings ever. I even started to collect Plantation extreme and one-time vintage editions. Still a great starter and affordable rum for beginners. Even the bottle looks stylish. Fun fact: it’s the very first rum in the RumX DB (RX1) :-). Is it a coincidence? I don’t think so. Cheers
Review by RUMpelstilzchen
A good rum for beginners. Smells really delicious, tastes very sweet, only brings a little flavor variety, as the sugar overlays a lot. But the sugar makes the rum very round. Despite or because of the sweetness, it often ends up in my glass. But too sweet for professionals.
Review by Galli33
Very lovely sweet(ened) rum! Pleasant to drink with a great range of smells and tastes of the Caribic. Big minus for the added sugar… Great rum for beginners!

Very good finish, coconut, vanilla that leaves a very good taste in the mouth, really makes you want to return

Nice, sweet, thick rum. Dried fruit, vanilla, coconut and a touch of wood on the nose. Sweetness is very high in this rum. The taste is round with dried candied fruit and vanilla coming first, then woody flavours coming up. I like to sip this one near, especially during cold days.

Mhhh I try and try and still can't find the high score for this rum. Yes, it doesn't hurt, it has a concise sweetness, but it lacks body and complexity. I'm out, leaving it in the cupboard for nice visitors who can't yet imagine that rum can be fantastic. It may be a door opener for them...

A very good transitional rum from spicy to rum. Very smooth and round on the nose and palate. Tasting is easy, with obvious, rather unanimous aromas. It's one of the classics for discovering rum.

Smell 9,5/10 Taste 9/10 Aftertaste 7,5/10 Image 7/10 (info about rum, bottle, carton-box, sugar free, marketing....) Total impression 8/10 ------------------ BTL Added sugar 👎👎👎 BTL II This rum is my weakness, without added sugar and I will increase my rating to 92/100 😁

I understand the success but too saucy for my taste. Part of the must have for those who start the rum (ron 😈)
Review by DosenZorn
Sweetened entry-level rum. Very sweet, very much vanilla, very much coconut, very artificial and somewhat thin from the consistency. Complexity you look there in vain, of course. Interesting flavors and a long finish as well. Among its sugary competitors, he still cuts off quite okay. Was also for me an entry into the world of interesting rums, but now quite boring. But for visit who have not yet much to do with rum the right drink.

Review by Vincent D
Very sweet nose with vanilla, coconut, caramel and discreet woodiness. A hint of cinnamon. On the palate, vanilla explodes. Caramel follows. Flambéed banana, woody notes add a bit of bitterness, not unpleasant given the sweetness of the rum. It lacks length and power, but it's a release that may appeal to many novices. Edit: the 2nd test was less convincing.

Already a great rum thanks to West Indies and Maison Ferrand
Review by Lot-NAS
This hardly a Rum - more a Rum based Sirup. A Lot of different sugars, some coconut and vanilla, toffee and vanilla pudding. It is not really complex but if you are a sweet tooth or want to gift something to a rum beginner this is maybe the bottle of your choice.

Review by Sam 🥃
Maybe a mistake on my part or not, but I discovered this rum a little late. Having already tasted other more complex and tasty rums, this one doesn't seem so exceptional to me. Much too sweet, even if the coconut, vanilla, woody and caramel flavors can make you salivate, it is still too sweet for me. If you really want a coconut and vanilla taste experience with a touch of ginger I would recommend more the Canerock also from Maison Ferrand, it is a spiced rum but at least it has, from my point of view, more flavor.

As expected. Top product! Excellent price / performance ratio. For social evenings with friends of sweet rum. Cheers! Cheers

Typical Barbados. Great entry-level rum. Coconut, vanilla, caramel, a hint of pineapple and banana. Light tannins. Not overly sweet, not too woody. Definitely a very successful rum that polarizes and is well-rounded and balanced with a certain light complexity.
Review by Dunzi
A very well-known classic, which is certainly not so popular for nothing. Really a lot of coconut, no sharpness, very round. For me, it is not one of my favorites, too little special, but to be fair I have to rate this rum very good.
Review by abaker-rum
This rum has a strong coconut nose, with caramel, ethanol, and some rooibos tea. The rum is very sweet on the palate with oak, caramel, and baking spice notes. The finish is medium in length with not much complexity. This rum is so sweet and viscous, it coats your mouth and teeth.

05.2024 First impression: light, coconut, nice amber color, nice bottle Nose: round, a little fruit, coconut, vanilla, hint of funk Palate: swelling alcohol, then there is a round mixture of everything that characterizes rum Finish: medium length, wood, slightly bitter Overall impression: quite decent after-work sipper without any special flourishes, in my opinion does not live up to the hype surrounding it. Also good in the mixer. Still remains at 7.5 201X? no comment

Bleibt klar mein Favorit! Drinks: - Pur: 5/5 - Rum Fashioned: 5/5 - Rum Cola: 5.5/5 ;-) - Rum Mule: 4.5/5

Top sweet long pleasant to the nose and the first taste until the return
Review by Godspeed
It’s got added sugar so on principle I’m gonna knock off some points. BUT I must say that as far as dosed rums go this is quite well done. It goes down smooth as silk and imo is an excellent dessert/digestif rum for after dinner. As a pinch-hitter for just such situations it is very nice indeed.

Also one of my first rums. But I have to admit that I also like to recommend this rum to newcomers. For me, it's a good starter rum. Edit: quite okay as a mixer for the summer. I now prefer harder projectiles for a CubaLibre.
Review by Dim Itri
The nose is very discreet, linear with light cocoa notes. In the mouth it is soft, smooth and a little too sweet for my taste (without being in the liquorice). It lacks cruelly of complexity, of body too! On the palate we find the light cocoa of the nose associated with pastry notes. In conclusion, I would say that this is a rum that can be drunk without having to intellectualize it, perfect for young palates or discovery evenings for novice friends. I also find that for an equivalent price, there is largely better on the market.
