The RumX Guide to Alcoholes Finos Dominicanos

A distillery with no brand of its own

AFD is unusual: a distillery built as a joint venture, not a brand. It opened in 2010, co-owned by Barceló and Yazoo Investments, who take its spirit and bottle it under their own labels. Sitting in a Free Trade Zone near San Pedro de Macoris in the Dominican Republic, it makes around 18 million litres of pure alcohol a year, more than Brugal.

Cane juice, but not agricole

AFD is the rare big Dominican distillery that works from cane juice rather than molasses, surrounded by 7,000 hectares of its own cane and powered almost entirely by burning the bagasse. But do not expect a Martinique-style agricole: AFD distils all the way to about 96 percent on a four-column still, which strips out the grassy cane character and leaves a very clean, light spirit, the Spanish-heritage style in pure form.

Barceló, the global giant

The biggest customer is Barceló, founded by the Spaniard Julián Barceló, who began blending in 1930 and launched the brand in 1950. Today Barceló is one of the best-selling rum brands on the planet, roughly sixth worldwide and fourth in the Caribbean behind Bacardi, Captain Morgan and Havana Club. Its flagship is the extra-aged Imperial, matured in ex-bourbon casks across a vast warehouse of more than 100,000 barrels.

Yazoo and the brand factory

The other co-owner, Yazoo Investments, turns AFD spirit into a whole shelf of brands: Relicario, Bacoo, Siboney, Veleiro and more, aged across some 50,000 casks. Backed by a Venezuelan group, Yazoo uses the Dominican Free Trade Zone to export to dozens of countries. It is a reminder that one quiet distillery can sit behind a surprising number of labels you already know.

Most popular vs highest rated

On RumX, AFD shows up under its customers' names rather than its own. The scores sit in familiar Spanish-style territory, mostly sevens: Barceló's Imperial Premium expressions and the Yazoo brands like Relicario land there, with aged independent bottlings of Dominican rum a touch higher. These are smooth, brand-led rums, made for easy drinking more than for chasing the top of the leaderboard.
