Mauritius Rum

Mauritius is the rum island of the Indian Ocean, a sugarcane country that makes it all: smooth aged molasses rum, fresh-juice agricole, and the spiced and fruit-steeped rhum arrange that locals drink. That range across three rum styles makes it one of the most varied origins in rum, still flying under the radar of most drinkers.

The RumX Guide to Mauritius

What is Mauritian rum?

Mauritius makes rum in every direction at once. There is smooth, aged molasses rum, led by New Grove from Grays, the island's biggest producer. There is fresh-juice agricole from Chamarel and Saint Aubin, grassy and bright. And there is the local rhum arrange, white rum steeped with fruit and spice. That range, from polished sipping rum to vibrant cane juice, is the island's signature.

The producers

Grays is the volume leader, behind New Grove and Lazy Dodo. Chamarel is the postcard agricole distillery in the island's south, while Saint Aubin works a historic sugar estate. Medine, home of the premium Penny Blue, and Labourdonnais round out a small but serious scene. Together they make Mauritius one of the most complete rum islands in the Indian Ocean.

How to drink Mauritian rum

It depends which Mauritius you reach for. The aged molasses rums like New Grove are soft sippers, good neat or over ice. The agricoles from Chamarel and Saint Aubin shine in a Ti Punch or a daiquiri, where their fresh cane brightness carries the drink. And the fruit-steeped rhum arrange is an easy after-dinner sip, served cold and treated more like a flavoured liqueur than a serious rum.

Most popular vs highest rated on RumX

The everyday Mauritius bottles are the New Grove and Lazy Dodo molasses rums, the easy introductions. But the RumX scores climb on the more characterful releases, led by New Grove Emotion and the cask-finished and agricole bottlings that reward more structure. Start with a soft New Grove for the smooth side, then explore a Chamarel or Saint Aubin agricole for the bright, grassy face of the island. The ranked list above shows where each lands.
