Marie Galante Rum

Marie Galante is rhum agricole country, distilled from fresh sugar cane juice in the French agricole tradition, but with its own muscular signature. The island is famous for bottling at high strength, with classic expressions at 59 percent and cask-strength versions higher still. That extra power, paired with grassy, mineral cane character, is why collectors seek it out. Three distilleries carry the island: Bielle, Bellevue and Poisson, home of Pere Labat.

Bielle is the island's best-known name, and it also distils the cult Rhum Rhum line that Luca Gargano and Gianni Capovilla created here, including the famous Rhum Rhum Liberation Integrale. Poisson makes the elegant Pere Labat range, a friendlier entry into the island style. Bellevue rounds out the trio and supplies rum that independent bottlers prize. The white high-proof agricoles are made for a Ti Punch, the Antillean ritual of cane juice rum, lime and a little sugar, where the island's power and grassy bite shine. The aged versions, especially Bielle and Pere Labat, reward slow neat sipping at room temperature. Because the strength runs high, a few drops of water open these rums up nicely. If you are new to agricole, start with an aged Pere Labat before the cask-strength bottles.

The widely tried bottles are the aged Bielle and Pere Labat, the accessible face of the island. The very highest RumX scores belong to the rare and powerful releases, led by the Capovilla-distilled Rhum Rhum Liberation Integrale and old vintage Bielle casks that experienced drinkers chase.
