Guyana Rum

Guyanese rum is sold as Demerara rum, named for the river and region around the capital. Its signature is a heavy, dark, pot-still character that was the backbone of British navy rum for centuries. The reason is wood: greenheart, a local timber so hard it cannot be cut with ordinary tools and does not rot underwater, was used to build still vats. Guyana is the last place on Earth where these wooden stills still run.

Guyana once had around 300 rum distilleries, mostly strung along the Demerara. Consolidation cut that to 44 by 1908, eight by 1960, and today just one: Demerara Distillers at Diamond. As estates like Skeldon, Albion, Versailles, Enmore and Uitvlugt closed, their stills were carried to Diamond rather than scrapped, turning it into a living museum of distilling.

Each lost estate lives on as a mark, a code for the still and recipe that made it. Port Mourant (PM) comes from the world's last double wooden pot still; Enmore (EHP) from the last wooden Coffey still; Versailles (VSG) from a single wooden vat. The French Savalle column even recreates the marks of long-gone estates like Albion. Reading the code on a bottle tells you exactly which still made it.

The flagship is El Dorado, launched internationally in the early 1990s, with the 15 Year its best-known bottle. Diamond also feeds the navy-rum world: Pusser's, Lemon Hart, Lamb's and Wood's all lean on Demerara rum. Since around 2016 a Demerara Rum Geographical Indication protects the name, so it must be distilled in the region. That is why XM, bottled in Guyana but distilled elsewhere, cannot call itself Demerara rum.

On RumX the gateway is El Dorado, especially the 12 Year and 15 Year. The summit, though, belongs to aged single-mark rum from the closed estates, bottled by the likes of Velier and Cadenhead. Vintage Uitvlugt tops 9.9/10, and old Port Mourant, Albion and Skeldon sit among the most prized rums in the world. Demerara rewards patience like nothing else, so the rails above are where to begin.
