What is Guatemalan rum?

Guatemalan rum is built on two ideas. First, its base is virgin sugar cane honey: juice from the first pressing of the cane, heated and reduced to a syrup, not molasses and not fresh-juice agricole. Second, it matures in the highlands of Quetzaltenango at around 2,300 metres, where thin cool air slows the spirit and rounds it out. Nearly all of it comes from a single producer, Industrias Licoreras de Guatemala, which makes both Zacapa and Botran.

Zacapa and Botran

The country's flagship is Ron Zacapa, the soft, sweet Solera blend that made Guatemalan rum famous, with the 23 as its reference bottle (our full Zacapa guide breaks down the 23, XO and 30). Its quieter sibling is Botran, the same Solera school at a friendlier price, led by the Botran 15. Both lean into the dessert-rum profile: vanilla, caramel, honey and a rounded finish.

How to drink it

Guatemalan rum is made to be sipped neat, at room temperature, in a tulip glass or over one big cube. Its sweetness and vanilla-caramel weight make it a natural after-dinner pour, closer to a dessert than a dry sipping rum. It also works in a rum old fashioned, but skip it in sharp, citrus-led cocktails where the sugar fights the drink. A light chill tames the sweetness if you find it too rich.
