Guadeloupe Rum

Where Martinique is locked into a wine-grade AOC, Guadeloupe works under the gentler IGP Guadeloupe. That single difference shapes the whole island: distillers are free to make both rhum agricole from fresh cane juice and rhum traditionnel from molasses, to play with fermentation, and to bottle at big strengths. The result is the most varied rum island in the French world, from light and grassy to dark and muscular.

Off Guadeloupe's south coast sits Marie-Galante, the island of a hundred windmills, where rhum is traditionally bottled strong, often at 59 percent and up. Its three distilleries, Bielle, Bellevue and Poisson (Père Labat), pour some of the most intense agricole anywhere. Bellevue is also the quiet engine behind many independent bottlings, the molasses Guadeloupe that collectors chase under labels like Velier.

On the main island, Damoiseau is the volume leader and famous for its full-proof bottlings, while Montebello and the old black-cane house Bologne sit on Basse-Terre. The Longueteau family runs both Longueteau and Karukera from the Espérance estate, with Reimonenq nearby. On Marie-Galante, Bielle and Bellevue carry the high-proof tradition.

Guadeloupe rewards the curious. Everyday Damoiseau and Montebello are the bottles people reach for, but the RumX scores climb highest for the Marie-Galante powerhouses and old cask-strength vintages, led by the cult Rhum Rhum Libération Intégrale from Gianni Capovilla. This is the island to explore when Martinique's strict style starts to feel narrow.
