Rum from Fiji comes almost entirely from one place: South Pacific Distilleries near Lautoka, working molasses through pot and column stills in the humid heat of the Pacific. The signature is a funky, high-ester profile — glue, burnt rubber, solvent — wrapped around overripe tropical fruit like pineapple, banana and apricot. It’s the closest thing outside the Caribbean to Jamaican funk, and several reviewers here say they can now tell the two apart.
Community sentiment splits along age lines. The 2001 vintages, mostly bottled by independents, pull ratings above 9.0/10 and get called the region’s high point. The younger supermarket bottlings — largely Plantation — land closer to 6.5–7.5/10, with steady complaints about thin body, added sweetness and cognac-cask finishes that muddy the funk.
