Wagemut is the rum label of Nicolas Kröger, a German master blender and former bartender whose bottles also carry the producer name N. Kröger. He built a large following on his Wagemut YouTube channel with blunt, honest tastings, and the same ethos drives the brand: bottle at natural strength, state the age and cask, add no sugar and never dress a rum up as something it is not. The range began as single-cask selections from leading Caribbean distilleries, above all Foursquare in Barbados, and grew into one of Germany's most active independents, with a members club, a yearly advent calendar and, more recently, Wagemut's own distilled rum. The thread across the range is transparency: no added sugar, so where a bottle tastes rich it is the cask talking and not dosage.

The bottle most people mean by Wagemut is the PX-Cask, a Foursquare Barbados rum of around ten years finished in Pedro Ximenez sherry casks, soft and sweet with raisin and dried fruit straight from the cask, and the most logged Wagemut on RumX. Stepping up, the XO is an older Foursquare at eighteen years, drier with more oak and depth. The Maduro from the Aficionado Collection leans darker and spicier, built with cigar lovers in mind. Softer and lower in strength, the Ida van der Ille is the easy, approachable end of the range. Beyond the core bottles, Wagemut is really a single-cask house. Most releases are one-off casks from Foursquare, T.D.L in Trinidad and Worthy Park in Jamaica, picked and bottled in small numbers, which is why the same rum can sell out and never return. The Fasssprache series takes that further, finishing one base rum in sixteen different woods, from American and French oak to mizunara, cherry and walnut, so you taste the cask itself rather than the spirit. Most recently Wagemut has begun distilling its own rum, including a First High Ester Batch, a move from selecting other people's casks to making the spirit from scratch. Wagemut is built for sipping neat in a tulip glass. The PX-Cask and Ida van der Ille are the easy entry pours, soft enough at standard strength to drink without water. The cask-strength specials and the Members and Special Editions, often well above 50 percent, reward a few drops of water to open them up. None of them carry added sugar, so what you taste is the cask and the age, and the drier cask-strength and single-cask bottles in particular keep their shape in a rum old fashioned. Save the rare single casks for neat sipping, where the cask choice is the whole point.
