Buy Ron Zacapa

Ron Zacapa is Guatemala's best-known rum, blended and aged high in the volcanic highlands of Quetzaltenango at around 2,300 metres, where thin cool air slows maturation. Its base is virgin sugar cane honey, a concentrated syrup of first-press cane juice, so it is neither molasses nor fresh-juice agricole. The Sistema Solera gives it the soft, sweet, dessert-like profile that made the 23 a modern classic.

The RumX Guide to Ron Zacapa

What is Ron Zacapa?

Zacapa is made by Industrias Licoreras de Guatemala and named after the town of Zacapa in the country's east. Its base is virgin sugar cane honey: juice from the first pressing of the cane is heated, clarified and reduced to a syrup-like concentrate. That is not molasses, but it is not fresh-fermented cane juice like rhum agricole either. The spirit then matures at the House Above the Clouds in Guatemala's highlands, in a Sistema Solera that blends younger and older rums in stages. The payoff is a rum that tastes rich and rounded well before its age statement would suggest.

Zacapa 23, XO and 30: which is which

The core of the range is Zacapa 23, the Solera Gran Reserva, a blend of components aged roughly 6 to 23 years in the solera and the bottle most people mean when they say Zacapa. Above it sits Zacapa XO, the Solera Gran Reserva Especial, finished in ex-cognac casks of French oak for a more elegant, drier edge. The 30 Aniversario and the darker, fuller Edicion Negra round out the line, while the rare Royal is the top expression of the range. If you are starting out, the 23 is the reference; step up to the XO when you want more cask character and a drier finish.

How to drink Zacapa

Zacapa is built to be sipped neat, at room temperature, in a tulip glass or a tumbler with one large cube. Its sweetness and vanilla-caramel weight make it an easy after-dinner pour, closer to a dessert than to a dry sipping rum. It also works in a rum old fashioned or a short, stirred cocktail, but skip it in anything sharp or citrus-led, where the sugar fights the drink. A light chill tames the sweetness if you find the 23 too rich.

Zacapa vs Diplomatico, Don Papa and Zaya

Zacapa sits in the soft, sweet sipping-rum camp, so the bottles people cross-shop are its neighbours in style. Diplomatico Reserva Exclusiva from Venezuela is the closest rival, similarly rich but with more dried fruit and a touch more body. Don Papa from the Philippines is sweeter and more vanilla-forward, an easy crowd-pleaser. Zaya is the value pick in the same lane. If you like Zacapa 23 and want a step drier and more complex, the XO or a Diplomatico single vintage is the natural next bottle.

Most popular vs highest rated on RumX

The 23 is by far the most logged Zacapa in the RumX community, the bottle everyone tries first. But the scores tell a second story: the older and rarer expressions, the XO, the 30 and the limited Reserva Limitada releases, climb higher with experienced drinkers, who reward the extra wood and the drier finish. The pattern is classic Zacapa: start sweet and easy with the 23, then chase the drier, deeper bottles as your taste shifts. The ranked list above shows where each expression lands.

Frequently Asked Questions about Ron Zacapa

Ron Zacapa is made in Guatemala by Industrias Licoreras de Guatemala. Its base is virgin sugar cane honey, a syrup reduced from first-press cane juice rather than molasses. It is aged in the highlands of Quetzaltenango at around 2,300 metres, a site the brand calls the House Above the Clouds.

Yes, Zacapa is clearly on the sweet side, with vanilla, caramel and honey notes and a rounded, dessert-like finish. Independent measurements report roughly 10 to 20 grams per litre of dissolved solids depending on the bottling, usually given as sugar equivalent. That fits the sweet impression, but it is not an official producer figure.

For fans of soft, sweet sipping rum, Zacapa is one of the most loved bottles in the world, and the 23 holds a strong community rating on RumX across thousands of reviews. Drinkers who prefer dry, funky or high-proof styles often find it too sweet, so it depends on your taste.

The Zacapa 23 is the everyday reference and the best place to start. For more depth and a drier finish, the XO is the step up, while the 30 Aniversario and rare Royal sit at the luxury end. On RumX the older expressions tend to score highest with experienced drinkers.

Neat, at room temperature, in a tulip glass or over one large ice cube. Its sweetness makes it a natural after-dinner pour. It also works in a rum old fashioned, but it is less suited to sharp, citrus-driven cocktails where the sugar clashes.

Both are soft, sweet sipping rums. Zacapa 23 leans honey and caramel and feels a little lighter, while Diplomatico Reserva Exclusiva brings more dried fruit and body. If you want the sweeter, smoother pour go for Zacapa; if you want a touch more richness and fruit, choose Diplomatico.

No – the number ‘23’ on the label does not mean that the rum has been aged for 23 years straight. Ron Zacapa 23 is a blend of different vintages, containing rums aged between approximately 6 and 23 years. According to industry observers, the average age is closer to 6–8 years; only the oldest component reaches 23 years. This practice led to class action lawsuits in the US in 2021, where consumers argued that the prominent ‘23’ on the packaging was misleading. The TTB (US regulatory agency) only permits voluntary age statements in the form ‘X years old,’ where X must be the age of the youngest distillate—meaning Ron Zacapa 23 would need to be labeled as ‘6-year-old rum.’ The lawsuits highlight a broader issue with Solera age statements in the rum industry.

Ron Zacapa XO is the brand’s ultra-premium variant and differs significantly from Zacapa 23 in terms of maturation and taste. While Zacapa 23 is a blend of rums aged between 6 and 23 years, XO contains even older distillates – it combines rums aged between 6 and 25 years and is given an additional finish in French cognac oak barrels. This gives the XO a more complex flavor profile (including notes of dark cherry, chocolate, dried fruit, and spicy oak) and makes it seem drier and less sweet overall than Zacapa 23. In addition, XO is significantly more expensive and is primarily enjoyed neat at room temperature, while Zacapa 23 is more versatile and also cuts a fine figure ‘on the rocks’ or in elegant cocktails.

The Sistema Solera is a multi-stage aging and blending system in which rums of different ages and cask types are gradually brought together. Younger and older components are blended in stages so the profile stays consistent. In Ron Zacapa 23, this blend spans components aged roughly 6 to 23 years, combined into a smooth, complex rum.

That depends on your expectations. For beginners, Ron Zacapa 23 offers excellent value for money: it’s globally available, consistent in quality, and makes entry into premium rum easy. On RumX, it receives solid ratings from the community. However, you should know that the rum is sweetened and the average age is 6–8 years (not 23). For the same price (around €40–50), you can also get unsweetened alternatives like Appleton Estate 12, Flor de Caña 12, or El Dorado 12, which are often preferred by connoisseurs. As a ‘gateway rum’—to find out if you like rum at all—Zacapa 23 is a safe choice.

Ron Zacapa is one of the most controversial rums in the world; opinions could not be more divided. The main criticisms: first, the misleading age statement, since the 23 on the label refers only to the oldest component while the average age is closer to 6 to 8 years. In 2021 this led to class-action lawsuits in the US. Second, the high sugar content (formerly up to 45 g/L, now around 20 g/L), which purists dislike. Third, the Diageo stake from 2011, since when some find the rum sweeter and less balanced. Still, nobody is indifferent to Zacapa. It has introduced many people to rum and remains a solid starting point for beginners.
