Ron Botran comes from Guatemala, where the family distills from virgin sugarcane honey rather than straight molasses and ages the spirit at altitude in the highlands around Quetzaltenango. The house works a solera system, blending rums of different ages to build the soft, rounded style that runs through the whole catalogue.

The lineup is broad. At the base sit Etiqueta Blanca and the No. 8 Reserva Clásica, followed by the widely sold Solera 1893. Above them are the cask-focused expressions: KI’ with its amber, spiced-leaning character, the Rare Blend Guatemalan Oak and Vintage French Wine Cask, and the higher-end Roajú, Infinito and Miracielo, which draw on ex-whisky, port, sherry and Burgundy wine barrels.

On the palate the pattern is consistent. Expect caramel, vanilla, dried fruit and dates, with oak spice and occasional coffee or leather on the finish. Reviewers repeatedly mention a creamy but light texture and short finishes, a direct consequence of the 40% bottling strength. The wine-cask edition splits opinion, some finding structure and a pleasant bitterness, others a sour, thin note. The Roajú is the one many single out for genuine complexity, with cinnamon, clove, licorice and ripe red fruit.

How people drink it depends on the bottle. The No. 8 and Solera 1893 do their best work over ice or in a dark and stormy and cola. The Guatemalan Oak, Roajú and Infinito reward slow neat sipping after dinner, where the caramel and cask spice have room to show. If you like sweeter, low-intensity Spanish-style rum, this is a comfortable place to start; if you chase high-proof intensity, the standard range may read as too soft.
