Buy Planteray

Planteray is the rum range Maison Ferrand renamed from Plantation in 2024. It is double-aged: distilled in the Caribbean, largely on Barbados at the historic West Indies Rum Distillery, then finished in France in ex-cognac casks, which gives the house style its rounded, polished character. Built by Alexandre Gabriel to make fine rum approachable, it runs from the flagship XO 20th Anniversary to a deep tail of high-ester and single-cask bottlings.

The RumX Guide to Planteray

What is Planteray?

Planteray is the rum brand of Maison Ferrand, the French house led by Alexandre Gabriel, who founded it as Plantation in 1999. Most of the rum is distilled in the Caribbean, with Barbados and the historic West Indies Rum Distillery at its heart, then shipped to France for a second maturation in ex-cognac casks. This double ageing, tropical first and continental second, is the signature: it rounds the rum out and layers in the soft, fruity cognac-cask character the range is known for. Most of the core blends carry a light dosage in the Ferrand house style, while the high-ester and single-cask releases are typically left dry.

From Plantation to Planteray: why the name changed

In 2024 Maison Ferrand renamed the whole range from Plantation to Planteray. The reason was the word itself: as Alexandre Gabriel told us in our interview, the name was meant to honour the land and the people who farm it, but it carried a painful legacy of slavery, especially in Barbados and Jamaica where the rum is made. The new name joins plant and ray, for the sunlight that grows the cane, and was unveiled on Barbados with the team. Only the name changed: the rums, the distilleries and the blends behind them are the same, so a bottle that says Plantation and one that says Planteray are the same liquid.

The range: XO 20th, Cut & Dry, Sealander and the Hogo Monsters

The flagship is the Planteray XO 20th Anniversary, a soft, polished Barbados blend and the bottle most people mean by Planteray. For something different there is Cut & Dry, a coconut rum that uses a whole Barbados coconut per litre, and the multi-origin Sealander. At the serious end sit the Hogo Monsters, Maison Ferrand's in-house name for super high-ester rums like the Hogo Monster, alongside rare single casks such as the 40-year Clarendon Jamaica MMW 1984. There is also a familiar line of pineapple, overproof and white rums for cocktails. Start with the XO, then chase the high-ester and single-cask bottlings as your taste deepens.

How to drink Planteray

The XO 20th Anniversary is built to be sipped neat or over one large cube, and its rounded, lightly sweet profile also makes a fine rum old fashioned. The pineapple (Stiggins' Fancy), overproof OFTD and white rums are made for cocktails, from a daiquiri to a tiki long drink, and Cut & Dry is the easy pick for a pina colada. The high-ester Hogo Monsters and the single casks are for sipping neat in a tulip glass, where their intensity and fruit get room to show. Save those for when you want to taste what high-ester and single-cask Planteray can do at full volume.

Most popular vs highest rated on RumX

Planteray is a rare case where the flagship is both the most popular and genuinely well-liked: the XO 20th Anniversary is by far the most-logged bottle in the RumX community and still holds a strong rating, unlike the entry bottles of some sweet brands. Above it, the scores keep climbing on the limited end. The high-ester Hogo Monsters, the festival Barbados High Ester releases and rare single casks like the 40-year Clarendon Jamaica MMW 1984 sit among the highest-rated rums on RumX. It is a brand with an easy, crowd-pleasing core and a deep tail of serious bottlings, and the ranked list above shows exactly where each one lands.

Frequently Asked Questions about Planteray

In 2024 Maison Ferrand renamed its Plantation rum range to Planteray. Alexandre Gabriel explained that the word Plantation, though meant to honour the land, carried a painful legacy of slavery, especially in Barbados and Jamaica where the rum is made. The new name combines plant and ray, for the sunlight that grows the cane. Only the name changed, not the rums or the recipes.

Yes. Planteray is simply the new name for Plantation, in use since 2024. The producer (Maison Ferrand), the distilleries, the blends and the recipes are unchanged, so a bottle labelled Plantation and the same one labelled Planteray contain the same rum. You will see both labels on shelves for a while as old stock sells through.

Many of the core Planteray blends carry a light dosage, a small addition of sugar in the Ferrand house style, which is part of their rounded character. Independent measurements put the XO 20th Anniversary at roughly 20 grams per litre, given as sugar equivalent. The high-ester Hogo Monsters and the single-cask releases are typically undosed and dry.

The XO 20th Anniversary is the everyday reference and the best place to start. For the range’s pineapple and cocktail bottles, the Stiggins’ Fancy pineapple and the OFTD overproof are the classics. On RumX the very highest scores go to the limited end: the high-ester Hogo Monsters and rare single casks such as the 40-year Clarendon Jamaica MMW 1984.

Broadly, yes. Planteray is one of the most respected accessible rum ranges, the flagship XO is both popular and well-rated on RumX, and the limited high-ester and single-cask bottlings rank among the best on the platform. The light dosage on the core blends divides purists, but the dry, serious end of the range answers that.

Both are rounded, accessible sipping rums. Planteray XO leans on its cognac-cask finish for a drier, more polished, slightly oaky profile, while Diplomatico Reserva Exclusiva is sweeter and fuller with more dried fruit. Choose Planteray for the more refined, lightly sweet pour, or Diplomatico for the richer, sweeter one. Ron Zacapa 23 sits close to Diplomatico in style.
