Naga draws on rum stocks from Indonesia and Thailand, using molasses fermented slowly with a red-rice yeast and column-plus-pot distillation. The spirit ages in tropical heat — reviewers note the high angel’s share from cellars near the southern Thai coast — before travelling to Europe for cask finishing. That two-part journey is central to the brand: the base rum is fairly light and neutral, and the finishing casks do most of the talking.

The range moves from the accessible Siam Edition and 12 Years (Thailand Siam Edition), both bottled at 40% with vanilla, caramel, wood and chocolate, to the more experimental releases. The Pearl of Jakarta Triple Wood runs through teak, bourbon and cherrywood; the Anggur leans hard on red wine and sherry-like sweetness; the Shani PX Cask Finish adds raisin, honey and red fruit; and the Full Proof, a cask-strength 2011 single cask, brings darker coffee, black pepper and roasted oak. The flavored Malacca sits apart as a sweet, kumquat-forward spiced rum.

Tasting-wise, expect softness, sweet fruit and short-to-medium finishes on the standard bottlings, with more grip and complexity on the Full Proof. Purists should know several editions are noticeably sugared.

Most people drink the entry bottlings neat as an undemanding evening sipper, or in fruity cocktails — the Malacca does duty in a Pina Colada. The PX and Full Proof reward slow sipping with a little air.
