Montebello is bottled by the Marsolle family at the Carrere distillery in Petit-Bourg, Guadeloupe, one of the island’s older working agricole producers. The rums are distilled from fresh sugarcane juice on a creole column still, and the house runs an unusual maturation trick on some cask-strength lots: filled barrels are sealed inside steel containers to push the interaction, which partly explains why bottlings aged a decade in humid tropical cellars can still land at a modest 45% instead of a fiercer strength.

The catalogue is wide. At the top of the intensity scale sit the Brut de Colonne experiments like No. 22A, near 83% and described by reviewers as oily, floral and packed with fermented melon and cane. The Zenga white at 60% and the Canne Noire Black Edition are the mixing workhorses, with a fresh, spicy, William-pear character that drinkers say shines in ti-punch. The Vieux 6 ans and the Vieux Rhum 8 ans are the value sippers, showing sugarcane, anise, licorice and green citrus. The various Brut de Fût releases, including the 8 ans and cognac-finished 10 year, lean gourmand with vanilla, orange confit, wood and pastry.
