J. Gow takes its name from an eighteenth-century Orkney pirate, and the rum is distilled on that same island group off the north coast of Scotland. This is one of a small wave of Scottish rum makers, alongside Ninefold and Sugar House, working molasses in a country better known for whisky.

Production runs on pot stills, and the house style shows it: high ester, a little acetone and glue on the nose, olive and vegetal notes, molasses and tropical fruit underneath. The Wild Yeast Series pushes this further, fermenting with strains like Kveik and NMO for extra funk, and finishing some in Moscatel casks. Aged expressions such as Revenge (three years, bourbon cask), Fading Light, Fading Light XO and the cask-strength J. Gow show honeycomb, mango, toffee, cloves and a dry, spicy, oaky finish. A few carry a peaty, briny edge that reads more like young whisky.

The Culverin Pure White is the value pick, praised for Daiquiris and Dark ’n’ Stormy duty. The Spiced Rum is the outlier and the most criticised bottling, heavy on cinnamon and gingerbread that many feel masks the spirit.

Drink the aged rums neat with time to open up, ideally with a chocolate or nutty snack that one member says transformed the Spiced version. The white and funkier releases shine in cocktails where their ester punch cuts through. If you’re new to J. Gow, start with Fading Light XO or a Wild Yeast bottling rather than the Spiced.
