Goslings traces back to 1806, when the family set up shop in Bermuda, and the business has stayed in family hands ever since. The signature Black Seal name comes from the old practice of sealing bottles with black wax. Today the house is a blender rather than a distiller, marrying imported Caribbean rums and aging or finishing them for its own line.

Production centres on molasses-based blends aged in bourbon barrels. The range runs from Black Seal at 40%, up through the 151 Proof at 75.5%, the lighter Gold Seal built for cocktails, the older Family Reserve, a rye-cask finish of that blend, the single-barrel Papa Seal, and the gimmick-tinged Spirited Seas, aged in barrels carried at sea.

On the palate, expect dark territory throughout: burnt caramel, treacle, dark chocolate, coffee, raisin and baking spice, often over a sweet, full body. Reviewers note added sugar around 20 grams per litre in some expressions, which softens the profile and, for a few, tips into cola-and-market-coffee flatness. The 151 hides its strength better than most overproofs, and the Family Reserve reads more complex and balanced.

Most people drink Black Seal exactly as intended: the Dark ’n Stormy with ginger beer and lime, or in rum and cola. The 151 does duty in Zombies and for flaming cocktail garnishes. The Family Reserve and Papa Seal are the ones members reach for neat or over ice, ideally as an after-dinner pour when you want chocolate and dried fruit rather than fireworks. If you want a Bermuda mixer with real value, this is the reference point; if you want a nuanced sipper, start higher up the range.
