Diplomático rum was founded in 1959 and is produced by Destilerías Unidas S.A. in Venezuela, in the foothills of the Andes near Lake Maracaibo. In many European markets the same rum carries the Botucal name. Production leans on a proprietary blend of sugar cane honeys and molasses, distilled through both traditional copper pot stills and modern column stills, then aged in ex-bourbon and ex-malt whisky casks.

The range runs from the unaged Planas white rum, widely treated as a daiquiri and mixer bottle rather than a neat sipper, through Mantuano and the 8 Años, up to the flagship Diplomático Reserva Exclusiva aged to twelve years. Above that sit the vintage-dated Single Vintage, the Distillery Collection trio (No. 1 Batch Kettle, No. 2 Barbet Column and No. 3 Pot Still, made to show off single production methods), and the ultra-premium Ambassador Selection finished in Pedro Ximénez casks. Taste-wise, expect a sweet, soft Spanish style: vanilla, caramel, toffee, orange peel, raisin, dried cherry and dark chocolate, with light oak and coffee on the longer-aged bottlings.
