Dead Reckoning is the project of Justin Boseley, an Australia-based independent bottler who buys single casks from across the rum-producing world and, in many cases, gives them additional aging or finishing in Australian conditions. The name nods to old navigation, and the releases carry themed names like Mutiny, HMS Antelope, Nelson’s Dockyard and The Black Pit.

Production is source-and-finish rather than distilling. Casks come from Fiji (South Pacific Distilleries), Mhoba in South Africa, Foursquare in Barbados, Beenleigh in Australia and Port Mourant and Enmore stills in Guyana. Finishing casks range from Moscatel and Pedro Ximenez to red wine, port and muscat, often paired with tropical bourbon-cask maturation.

The taste depends heavily on which bottle you open. The Mutiny South Pacific is a dense, high-strength old Fiji, full of roasted coffee, dried orange, cask spice and dark fruit, with several tasters noting the 68% needs taming.
