Velier

Velier is an Italian company, founded in Genoa in 1947 and led since 1986 by Luca Gargano, one of the most influential voices in fine rum. Its idea was simple and radical: bottle rum that had aged fully in the tropics, at natural cask strength, with no sugar added and full transparency about distillery, year and ageing. That transparency, at a time when most rum hid behind soft blends, is why Velier bottles became collector grails.

Two collections built the legend. The Demerara series captured the historic wooden stills of Guyana, the Port Mourant double pot, the Enmore wooden coffey and the Diamond stills, in deep, powerful bottlings. The Royal Navy Rum is Velier's take on the old navy blend, an accessible icon in that Demerara-forward tradition. And then there is Caroni, the closed Trinidad distillery whose heavy, tarry rum Velier rescued and made world famous, led by releases like the Caroni 100 percent Trinidad 21.

Velier did not stop at vintage stock. Habitation Velier is its collection of pure single rums made with living distilleries, including unaged white marques and collaborations with Hampden in Jamaica, the partnership that brought high-ester funk to a wide audience. Gargano also championed Haitian Clairin, raw cane-juice rum from small producers. Running through all of it is the Gargano Classification, his push to grade rum by how it is distilled, with pure single rum at the top.

The Velier bottles people log most are the accessible icons, the Hampden collaborations and the Royal Navy style. The very highest RumX scores cluster on the old, rare and powerful: long-aged Caroni, vintage Demerara marques and single-cask Habitation releases that experienced collectors revere.
